hi friends, first post and am appreciative for the opportunity.
as chance has it i'm going to look at the 73' yellow grand record motobecane, first thing in the a.m.
seller seems like a very good guy ... i'm pretty handy and comfortable w/ tools .. confident i can learn to clean up and restore this bike.
i'm hoping some you could offer opinions on this bike? it'll be my first "good"bike. are there any potential problems i'm not seeing? can i, should i bring bike back to original?
a million thanks for the help,
mike

I really can't advise if you should return it to normal or not; that going to depend a lot on what you want. If it were mine, I would replace the front derailleur with a Campy NR to match the rear and replace the bar end shifters with Simplex SLJ down tube shifters. I would also put on a Brooks saddle.

Other than that, the bike will need a total tear down to check for any broken or worn parts and re-greasing of all bearings, replace consumables (tires, chain, bar tape) and use a good hand polish to clean the paint followed by a good wax. The aluminum parts should also be cleaned and polished. You will most likely have some issues with French specific parts and tools but those are easily overcome. When you go look at it, make sure the seat post and handle bar stem are not frozen (loosen bolts and try to move them).

This could be a very nice bike with some time and effort. Good luck.

I would buy that bike if the wheels are true, no hops, and there are no cracks or dents in the frame. The bike has good quality parts. The Suntour bar end Power Shifters are very nice. A good cleaning, full lube on all bearings, new bar tape, cables and tires and you have a real nice bike.

Oh my, what a beauty! Always tempting to add an older KHS MTB to the collection.

I used to have one of those Cateye cyclecomputers, got it back in '89.

I know someone here is looking for one of these.

https://stlouis.craigslist.org/bik/5279347721.html

Centurion Expert Ironman Dave Scott road bike has a short 28" stand over height, 12 speeds with frame mount Shimano 105 shifters, a 18 1/2" ChroMoly Tange lugged frame, good 24" X 1" front tire and a good 700C x 1" rear tire, yes it was made that way, Araya aluminum wheels with quick release front and rear, salmon and white paint, 3 piece aluminum crank with Biopace gears, aluminum pedals with sturips, aluminum handle bars with new wrap, quick release brakes, looks good, no rust, rides good. This is a 1986 model. Centurion bikes evolved into Diamondback bikes.
Call show contact info call before you come out. If you are reading this ad I still have the item, I will delete this ad as soon as it sells, thanks.

Not an exotic, but cheap and might appeal to the right shopper. This looks like a 23" mixte frame, a pretty rare bird. Peugeot made them but I usually only find Gitanes. A tall rider who wants an older step-through frame won't find many prospects. And...it has the super-exotic Mafac plastic brake levers!

vintage gitane mixtie

vintage gitane mixtie - $50

Custom made in france. All original. Will need new tires. Super chrome wheels made in france.

Speaking of tall, cheap women's bikes, here's a ladies' 23" Raleigh Sports, another fairly hard-to-find frame. I'd get it myself but have not the space or the time. Of course, if I could find me a tall, cheap woman...

Vintage 1970 Raleigh Sport

Vintage 1970 Raleigh Sport - $30 (North Richmond)

Made in England women's bike. Needs tires. Three speed

That's a very uh... creative control setup (easily remedied of course).

Not that rare, though many sit on them hoping for PBBikes pricing. In auctions without reserve they usually go at moderate pricing.

A few weeks ago someone posted a link on how to search all of Craigslist at once for a specific item (in this case, a bike) but I can't remember where that post is. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks and much appreciated!

you can also use SearchTempest: Search all of Craigslist nationwide & more

You can narrow it by category, distance, etc....useful if you are looking at a large area.

You can also set up a "Google Alert" using similar syntax. Go to https://www.google.com/alerts

and enter your search parameters in the field and Google will email you whenever it finds a match.
