I've never seen a Campy chainring this large before. Not sure it makes the whole kit-n-kaboodle worth $1200. The crank is a normal (presumably pre-date-code era) Strada according to the seller. Still, it might be just what you're looking for.

This one has a certain panache. Too small for me but mostly original. Brakes are mod 35s. Extraordinarily rare in aluminum. Price is more than reasonable.

Singlespeeded but not drewed. Frame looks like it could be something special (chromed fork crown, rear dropouts). Reynolds stickers on the fork? Weinmann concave rims? The cinnamon color reminds me of a 70's Trek I saw on the forums.

[h=2]Single Speed Steel - about 58cm - $110 (SW Mpls, MN)[/h]Single Speed Steel - about 58cm

This is my city bike -- for commuting and riding around the lakes with the kids, etc. It's a bit rough around the edges --- paint is not great, mechanically decent but some looseness in the hubs --- but it has style and it's quite a nice ride.

Wheel size is the old 27-1/2"(?) size -- not the modern 700c. It's a road bike frame (maybe a Paramount) that was converted to a SS by previous owner. I bought it about 5 years ago and have a few hundred miles on it with no issues. I added a water bottle cage mount -- and I could put a cage on there if desired. Tires are decent too --- some whitewall style with a mild tread pattern. Comfortable and stable in fall and even snowy bike paths in winter.

If you need a commuter or just something to kick around town on paths around the lakes, or for fetching groceries, this is the way to go.

Take a look at the pics. Being sold as-is. Cash only.

Happy to arrange for a test ride.

That Raleigh looks to be in great condition which makes it a terrific deal at <$300. Getting very hard to find these with good chrome still left on them.

I think I've read in the past some of you buy non-local bikes of craigslist by having the seller take the bike to a bike shop, is that correct? Do most bike shops do this packaging and mailing and for what kind of fee? Do you pay the bikeshop the whole amount and then have the shop pay the craiglister? Just wondering how this all works, since it seems much better deals are found on craigslist than ebay.

I have done several transactions this way...here is what I do...

(1) Contact the seller and set the "deal"...i.e. how much, etc...
(2) Get them to agree to drop at a local bike shop
(3) Pay them some "earnest" money through Paypal (or even through the mail)...1/2 the money or something like that
(4) Contact the bike shop...generally, the bike shop will pack it...and usually around $50
(5) When the seller drops the bike at the shop, I ante up the rest of the money...after confirming with the shop that they have it
(6) The shop packs the bike and lets me know the size of box and weight
(7) I get a Fedex airbill from shipbikes.com...my preferred shipping method
(8) I send the airbill, via email, to the bike shop
(9) They print it out and confirm shipping...
(10) I receive the bike/frame...and celebrate...or cry (this is still a bit risky, as you have not laid eyes on the bike/frame)...in doing this several times, I have only "cried" once...and then it still got to be ok in the end

I am in the middle of doing a deal like this right now...waiting on the seller to drop the bike at the shop...

The one time I did this I had the misfortune to pick a shop that could care less about packing. They wrapped the frame in one layer of newspaper. Had a nice dent in the seat tube from the wheel.

If I was to deal with a remote shop to ship a bike, I would do two things:
  • ask for recommendations from someone here or on one of the other bike lists/forums (CR, Paceline, etc)
  • try to stick to shops which deal with triathletes, who generally ship fairly expensive bikes great distances. (I realize some probably invest in hard cases.)

Thanks for the info fellas. Seems still pretty risky and a bit of a hassle. Maybe worth it if you find a $1000 bike for $100 but not so much for a $250 bike for a $100. I thought perhaps after the bike store had the bike in hand and looked over then you pay them, would be a bit more secure. But if your still sending 1/2 or whatever to the craigslister first... I would imagine there are plenty out there that would take the money and run, especially if they know your out of stater who have no idea who they are. I mean I've set up deals on craigslist and drove an hour or so only to get there to have the item already sold like 20 minutes ago, and the seller knew I was coming out and how far it was. Pretty crappy ethics by some.

For example thumpism posted that red and white Super Sport above in post 30768. I love that look and it almost perfectly matches my Prologue. For $200 I'd buy it in a heartbeat as long as there was nothing majorly wrong. I see them on ebay for 400-500. Lets say they take $350 (listed at 400 obo for example), still that is $150 difference between the bikes. But then the shop takes another $50 so only $100 difference. I'm not sure that is worth the extra hassle and risk... at least there is some guarantee with ebay(?) and there is always feedback/reputation too. Thanks for the info though, I'll keep those instructions handy.

Pinarello for $100. Probably already gone but worth a try. Funny thing is, I saw this EXACT bike at a pawn shop about 5-6 years ago. It has not changed AT ALL! The panw shop was asking the typical $399, even in the state it was in with Shimano parts, broken cable guide, and all.,,,,BD
