After a lot of elbow grease, removing all rust, touching up scratches, cleaning and regreassing drivetrain/hubs, new vintage correct cables and housing, new toe clip straps, it turned out into a great bike. Fits me perfectly at 54 cm. I spent about 50 $ additionally on it and this is how it is looking now. I think I got a bargain, very happy with it:

Frame is Columbus tenax, CrMo, billet brazed joints, araya weels, all Shimano 600 EX components, solid as a bullet. Really happy with the bike.

One thing that confuses me, the badge says Schwinn Chicago but by 86 I think these were made in Geenville, Missisipi, or Japan. The badge was not attached when I got it and the seller gave it to me separately. I wonder if they were still using Schwinn Chicago badges after 83?, perhaps the badge is from another bike.

In case anyone is wondering what color to do touch up paint for this bike, I found testors red 1103 and classic black enamels match up pretty well.
Very nice find.

I really like this one and am hoping someone reaffirms for me that it is $100-$150 too high.

Would you settle for $200 too high?

My hero! I'm just taken in with how pristine and ready-to-ride this Master is compared to the Expert I'm looking at in the $200-$250 range which needs all the usual tires, tape, hoods, etc. Sounding a lot like both of them are too high. Thanks!

Well, you could certainly justify a ~$50 premium for "pristine-ness", and another $50 for it being a bike shop, with presumably, it having been checked out and adjusted, and some after-purchase support, so maybe $150 high is more accurate. Every Ironman I've ever seen could have been gotten for $250-ish or less, but they all had some issues with consumables and tuned-ness. OTOH, it also needs pedals.

If you can get that Centurion for $400, I think you'd be very happy with it, it looks unridden, check out the dropouts. And those Mavic hubs are super nice.

Here's a titanium Giordana with Chorus and the hard-to-find alloy Record shifters for a mere $850 in San Jose

If you think the CL price is high, the same bike is on Ebay with a BIN option of $650!

Since you're in Houston, I'd just walk into the bike shop it's at and try face-to-face negotiating. A cash-right-now offer to get the bike out the door can work wonders!

I am a newbie (by the standards of forum participation) though I peruse this thread alot (lurk?) I'm wondering about facilitation. This 1980 Trek 710 in MD has been posted a couple of times and the price has dropped $50 and I find my interest is peaking. I am in NC so not too far to keep bike shipping sane. Two members have posted it - I am wondering if a member might be near it and how do facilitators work?

Welcome to the forum. Generally, you do not want to post that you are interested in a bike in this thread as there are a lot of lurkers. Your purchase might get scooped before you get to it. Furthermore, it is off topic for this thread. You should ask in the facilitators sticky thread. That bike is in the Ocean City, MD area, so you will need to ask for someone who is near there. I know of no one, but @jeirvine might know someone.

fwiw, I think it has piqued your interest, though your interest could be peaking and then waning.

On the plus side, it's a good price. The negative, it's French.

Interesting Centurion above. Note that the shifters have been replaced with 6400 series, so could be either 6 or 7 speed (the shifters could be purchased separately with a little doodad that converted them to 6 speed). Other than that, looks like it needs tires/tubes and the cable & bar tape look original, so there's another $90 or more in parts to make it a solid rider. Probably a good deal at $350-400, and agree that walking in with cash on hand can be a powerful negotiating tool.

Thanks for pointing me to the facilitator thread. It struck me - that tip would be worth a moderator adding to a list of suggestions for participating. I am amused and entertained by this thread. I didn't realize I'd made a pun until you pointed it out. My interest in a bike was piqued and as the price falls begins to go upwards - so more piqued. Waning happens after the piquing tops off.

On what basis do you think the asking price is too high?

A IM Master is more dear than a IM Expert. Near perfect paint is hard to find on an Ironman, they tend to oxidize at the base of the seat tube and the TT paint can oxidize around the cable guides. Those rims and hubs are pretty sweet too. Offer the shop full price, but make them install new tires, cables, housing for you.

I sold an Expert last month for $450 and I don't have the overhead of a storefront bike emporium.

My basis was, Every Ironman I ever looked at was being offered for $250 or less. I can see justifying a pristine condition premium for this one, but I don't think it's worth $400 or more. But it's not my money, and I do my own work on the bikes. I did reconsider my earlier post that it was $200 too high, down to $150 too high. In person, if it REALLY is pristine, I could see $400, but not $500, but of course, YMMV.

Hmm, really? not according to this: Industry Overview 2014 - National Bicycle Dealers Association I see no marked declines to prove your point. In fact if you remove 1992 so you can evenly divide the years up by the first 11 and then the second 11 years you find average sales stayed relatively flat with a slight nod towards the last 11 years; the first 11 years the average sales were 17.19 million bikes sold and the second 11 years was 17.85 million bikes sold, so your statement doesn't hold water.

That above website will also shoot holes in all you pro LBS people about how much damage online sales is doing to bike shops...it's just all BS brought on by LBS's to scare people into thinking there won't be any bike shops around if you don't pay a lot more money for your stuff at their stores. No wonder there is BS in LBS!!!

Retail sales in general, not just bikes, are declining but that's due to the worsening of the US economy and not because people are selling stuff personally so as not to have any overhead.

+1. I really do like this bike but I don't know that I place the value on these Ironmans that many forum members seem to.

For $450, there's a 58cm full Campy Bob Jackson on Houston CL right now. As nice as this Centurion is, I don't see it having this level of pedigree.

Not to mention, a zoom in on the Centurion's bottom bracket show what appears to be a surprising amount of rust. Debating whether to go see in person.

Here's an Ironman in Dallas, maybe an Expert and not a Master? Followed up with a list of cheap scores, mostly Japanese. Might just be a bunch of junk to some, but here goes:

[h=2]Colnago mexico - $1000 (Oak park) https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bik/5321544538.html[/h]

Selling my colnago Mexico to try and catch up on some bills. I'll start by saying I'm firm at 1500 cause I love the bike and wouldn't mind keeping it at all.
It's a 56cm
I switched the rear derrailur and chain for a modern shimano 105 just to make shifting smoother and brake calipers but still have the original campy rear and chain, everything else is campy
And everything has been gone through. Bike is a rideable show piece. Haven't seen too many in black. Has campagnolo cranks, bottom bracket(was taken apart all bearings and races are perfect)
Campagnolo hubs laced to mavic double wall rims. Has campagnolo dropouts, seat post headset. Frame is Columbus steel and in wonderful shape. Has brand new thick slick tires in 700x28 which make the ride a dream. Also has a colnago pantographed stem with nitto bars. Bike will come with original colnago seat. Again I'm firm on price cause I adore the bike. If you have any questions feel free to text.
