NOS(!) Mavic SSC Group on NOS Vitus 979, Highly Collectable, Gorgeous! - $1400 (san carlos)

Date: 2010-02-17, 9:52PM PST
Reply to: sale-x8hhe-1606087074@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

Extra clincher wheelset (with complimentary wheel bags):

Literature and documentation:

Vitus with complimentary vintage wheel covers (to protect tubular tires)

For sale is a gorgeous NOS (new old stock, never ridden) Vitus 979 framest with complete and NOS second/final generation Mavic SSC gruppo, two wheelsets and tons of extras (documentation, literature, etc., see pic.'s and below). Frame size is "59cm" (c-t), which fits like a normal 57-58cm c-c frame (57cm c-c tt). Everything is period-correct and matching, down to the original frame stickers and Vitus water bottle.

This bike took me well over a year to source and put together and the Mavic components alone are worth the purchase price if sold separately (e.g., starfish cranks regularly sell for $500 on Ebay, derailleurs, brakes, etc., all similarly desirable/valuable). It was a project I took on when my knee was seriously injured and I had a lot of spare time. I finished it two years ago and it's been hanging proudly on a wall ever since. Now that I'm healthy and can train and race again, I need to make room for new bikes. While I could part-out the bike and probably make a bit more money, with cycling, two little kids, a busy law practice, etc., I simply don't have the time or inclination. It would also pain me to disassemble it now that it's complete. That said, you could transfer the gruppo to a different bike if a different period mark has significance to you like Vitus does for me, or (my strong suggestion), keep it as an integral whole and excellent example of a cutting edge mid-80's high-end racing bicycle. Of course, you could also ride it!

Below is a cut/paste of my spec. sheet. The bike comes with tons of extras, to wit: archived Bike-Pro detailed descriptions of each Mavic component, Vitus and Mavic color brochures, Bicycle Sport magazine edition with feature article on the Vitus 979, NOS Vitus bottles, NOS Vitus and Mavic stickers, the cool retro wheelcovers in the last pic. (btw, that saddle is level, poor photo makes it look like it's pointing up), etc. The bike is also currently featured in an Ebay auction (search for "Vitus NOS" and you'll find it).

SPECIFICATION SHEET:

FRAMESET:
Vitus 979 Frame/Fork NOS in original bubble wrap from Euro-Asia Imports (they found a few new-in box Vitus's in a wherehouse several years ago, all sold quickly) with warranty card and Vitus owner’s manual attached to bike; purchased and built-up 6/05, never ridden

COMPONENT GROUP
Full Mavic SSC Component Group (Note: This is the complete 2nd generation and final full Mavic group, produced from 1989-1993, post-SSC/1st gen. and pre-Zap which began in 1994; used by Once, Lotto (‘92), Gan, Clas (‘93); individual component Model #’s listed, Bike-Pro archival descriptions/photos of each component included):
Brakes: Model 451 (note: single-pivot, hidden springs (2)), NOS
Brake Calipers: Model 451, NOS
Crankset: Model 631 (note: 130mm BCD pattern, commonly referred to as “starfish” model), gorgeous, near-NOS with only the faintest signs of handling
Rear derailleur: Model 840 (note: 840 is racing cage; long “touring” cage is version 841), NOS
Frnt. derailleur: Model 862 (note: 862 is braze-on; clamp is version 860), NOS
Headset: Model 305, NOS
BB: Model 610/616 Series (note: “threadless” & ”centerable”), NOS
Pedals: Model 646 (note: Mavic black/yellow clipless pedals by Look, heel/toe pivoting system w/adjusting tool); excellent cond. with light wear marks
Shifters: Model 821 (note: earlier SSC shifters were retro-friction design by Simplex), NOS
Bars: Mavic 350 (42mm, 26.0mm clamp), NOS

OTHER PARTS:
Seatpost: Campagnolo C-Record, 25.0mm, NOS (note: C-Record (“Corsa”) was top-of-the line updated/aero version of Nuovo Record; Nuovo, Super Rec. groups ended in 1987, replaced by C-Rec. which ran through early 90's)
Stem: 3TTT Synthesis, 110mm, NOS (produced for approx. 10 years beginning in early 90's, no longer made; Mavic stem included but the 3TTT is so beautiful I couldn't resist)
Saddle: Selle Italia Turbo Matic 2, NOS (80's; black/yellow w/ “full floating system”)
Chain: Sedis (French, 80's), NOS
Housing/Cables: traditional 80's housing with matte-black finish; modern Dura Ace cables
Handlebar Tape: Ambrosio “Prof. Original Bike Ribbon” (white) or Cinelli cork (white), both late 80's/early 90's, NOS
Computer - Avocet 31 (sourced directly from Avocet; succeeded orig. Avocet 30, pre-35/40/45; late 80s’/early 90's), NOS

WHEELSETS (tubular and clincher, both 126mm spacing as required by Vitus 979):
I. Tubular Wheelset (beautiful, cutting-edge set that belonged to J. Boyer and was hanging - unused - from the rafters of his old shop; near-NOS, no signs of wear on brake tracks)
Rims - Mavic GL330 front (24 hole), Mavic CX18 rear (28 hole)
Hubs - Mavic (matching; 80's or early 90's ed. w/cast Mavic logo; pre-501 which came out in 1995 with 501 labels around outer hub shell)
Spokes: Bladed Wheelsmith front and rear
Lacing: Front is radially-laced, rear is 2x drive and radial non-drive
Freewheel: Shimano Dura Ace (English-threaded; 7 spd.; 13x24)
Skewers: Mavic alloy (light grey annodized color, not the shiny/heavier steel models as below)

II. Clincher Training Wheelset (not pictured; this is a training set and is the only component of the sale which is not NOS or close. Still, very presentable and perfectly functional)
Rims: Mavic Open Pro (28f, 36r)
Hubs: Late-model Mavic 501 hubs w/501 labels (approx. 1995)
Spokes: DT Swiss front and rear, straight-gauge
Lacing: 3 cross front and rear
Freewheel: Shimano SIS (6 spd.; 13x21)
Skewers: 501 Mavic steel skewers (shiny finish)

Yeah but, even though expensive, and even though not the hottest bike ever created....the all chrome, as we would have said it back when I was a kid, is "too cool for Sunday School".

I bought this used off a friend in 2006 for $125. I had the front wheel stolen, and I removed the rear tire after a flat

Left with a nice frame in good condition that's been kept in my crawl space for the last 5 years. Nice for a fixed conversion. Little rust.

Here are some pics. I'm willing to negotiate. Rear wheel included if you purchase.

Thanks for looking.

I was seriously thinking about bidding on this, but I'll put it out here to ensure that it gets noticed by someone with deeper pockets than me. It's a 753 Merckx frame (58cm) with only 9 hours left that still hasn't seen a bid at $350 (shipping free).

Miele Lupa Italian Road Bike 52cm Small Red Shimano 700C Wheels Tires - $400 (Rogers Park)

Date: 2010-02-19, 1:13PM CST
Reply to: sale-uzqp9-1608374790@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bik/1608374790.html

I am selling my 52CM Miele Lupa road bike. The bike was made in 1997 by an Italian bicycle maker who wanted to build bikes in the style that made Bianchi, Colnago, Gios, Pinarello and Cinelli so desirable. Made of double butted steel, the Columbus tubing is very sturdy and well made. They were manufactured for years in Canada. The owner of the company passed away, and these bikes are no longer built. This bike was originally $700 or $800. It has full Shimano 105 components. The wheels are original, true, and without defect. If you look at the wheels they have 36 spokes in the front and rear - which is unheard of nowadays. This makes the wheels incredibly strong and rigid (most wheels nowadays only ave 32 in the rear . They even have the original Miele stickers on them. The wheel size is 700C which is the standard road bike size. The tires are new Continental tires, and they are in great shape. The brakes and shifters, and indeed all parts work great. It shifts more smoothly than my $2000 Dura Ace race bike. If you are 5'0 , 5'1, 5'2 , 5'3 , 5'4 , or 5'5 this bike should fit you very well. The bike is in tip top shape. The brakes are tight, the shifters, the wheels spin freely, and the seat is super comfortable. Please leave your number or just shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you mine. Thanks

I think the price is justified. It is a mint "one-off" - you're not likely to find another like it anytime soon.

Paris Sport road bike in Northern New Jersey. I've only seen a couple Paris Sports; I gather they were sold out of a store in NJ; some were imported from France, others were made here by well known frame builders including, at one point, Dave Moulton. As for this one... what do I know? I see turkey levers. I keep repeating to myself, I have too many bikes. I have too many bikes. But someone is going to snap this up! --R

That one's been on and off CL for months, so I'm guessing it's one of the gaspipe offerings. Paris Sports do appear with relative frequency locally, but usually they are the low-end bike boom stuff. Like you, I've got my eye out for the more high zoot stuff, but haven't seen it yet. In addition to Moulton, Mike Fraysse also 'imported' builders like Limongi, Orero and Cuevas to his shop in Ridgefield Park, NJ (see what Sheldon Brown published about Paris Sport here). I'm not sure, however, any of the frames those builders produced donned the Paris Sport label. I did miss out on an Orero track bike frame a year ago at an estate sale - a former BF member beat me to it, so at least it's 'in the family'.
