Try asking in the appraisals forum, you'll get more info there.
You can always send an offer directly to the seller, and the ad mentions an offer. Frankly, I look at something like this, and as a seller, I'd be willing to work with someone at 20% off, maybe. 25% is pushing it. So, if you think about it that way, and drop off $150, is the price still reasonable? To me, no, it isn't. Maybe it's a $400 frame --- maybe less, maybe more. I'd check the piggy bank and ask what's the ideal price for you, and then offer it. If he says no, then you can walk away. If it isn't too rusty, as some trainer frames get, I'd say that at a minimum this is a $250 frame, but I don't know where the upper end is. You have to search on closed listings to figure that out.

Huh. Took a month, but these finally arrived today. Too bad UPS beat the living bejesus out the boxes, holes everywhere, skewers and brakes hanging out all over, gotta love it. Fortunately, don't think anyone could manage to bend anything this heavy Back to finding the other few dozen cockroach eggs ...

So, is this bike's condition considered "used" or "pre-owned"...?

This Mercian is a little rough but I think the colours are really nice. Does anyone know what is up with those water bottle mounts?

That was a style of braze-on in the late 70s/early 80s. I don't know why it was used in particular, but I have a 531 frame with the same mounts. I would guess that it was done for one or two reasons: it reduces stress on the main tube, and/or there was an accessory that fit onto those braze ons.

That frame is a really good deal, but it's bigger than 55 cm. I think it's more like 58.

Agreed. My 55 Mercian for reference. Much shorter head tube.

Rare vintage Raleigh Super Course 12 Reynolds 531 double butted 63cm - $250 (mountain view)

It's understandable that these smooth riding bikes have such a loyal following. Frame is handmade in Raleigh's famed Carlton English shop. I saw a Super Course with a lower grade tubing (straight gauge 531) listed at $600 last weekend in Portland. This bike features a classic Reynolds 531 double butted frame (a rare version, only made for two years), nice Modolo brakes, beautiful Raleigh engraved crankset, and vintage Vetta Italian saddle. The original red color has sun faded to a nice beausaged pink. Bike is tuned and ready to ride. No rust. No dents. Large frame - 63 c-c seat tube, 58 c-c top tube. Priced to sell. $250.
