I have owned two Grand Sports. After I sold my first one I had seller's remorse. I found another one my size and picked it up. I found I didn't ride it much so I let that one go. They are nice bikes but not great. I will not pickup a third.

This is NOT a Grand Sport, it is a Competition! Much higher in the food chain!

Mea Culpa. In the early 70s the Competition was one up from the Grand Sports. No denying it is a better bike.

I am real curious what year(s) Raleigh made blue/white Competitions. I have never seen that color combo in their catalogs. I have only seen Gran Sport, Grand Sport, Grand Sports in those colors.

You're probably right; I'm certainly no expert. The blue/white bikes I saw probably were Gran Sports or Grand Sports or Grandma's Shorts or whatever. For what I would build from it, one of the Grannys would be just fine.

Remember, I can't ride drops anymore (back issue), so I would roadsterize it. Sell those dangly derailleurs and drop bar accoutrements and buy an AW hub, some fenders, and an upright handlebar/stem combo - not an upgrade, more of a backdate, if you see what I mean. I would go full-on retro, and that blue/white paint scheme would make for a visually stunning bicycle that glides effortlessly along at bike path speeds.

Something like I did with this Fuji Royale, for instance:

Fuji-san likes being a Roadster! She is one sweet ride.

It is indeed. Right across Smith Ave, just down the road from that scenic lookout by the High Bridge.

Very close to the Taco House and not so far from El Burrito Mercado.

Good eats on the West Side for sure.

It's quite a challenge climbing up Ohio Street after you have eaten your fill at Taco House.

I really like this Raleigh USA Competition frame. Seller says 1985 but I'm quite sure it's a 1986. So many ways you could take this unique color scheme.

Now that is one very classy chassis. But does that really look like a 58cm to you guys? I'm thinking 60...at least.

It does look like a tall 58 for sure. Seller seems fairly precise with his specifications. If I hadn't just bought another 80s Raleigh, this would be hanging next to my 6 other frames waiting for attention

I've never heard of biplane forks. I googled some pictures, so now I know what they look like, but what was the point? Was it to absorb some shock? Save weight?

Miyata 721 road bike- $175 (Grand Ave., St. Paul)

Miyata Seven 21 road bike -- 52 cm

For sale is a 1991 Miyata Seven 21 road bike in great condition. We bought this bike for my fiancee at The Hub Bike Co-op's annual sale, but it ended up being a little too big. This would be very well suited well for someone 5'5" - 5'9". Everything is in good working condition.

Specs:

- lugged cromoly (steel) frame and fork
- Shimano Exage 500 EX components -- mid-level components for 1990's road bikes.
- 3 x 7 gearing
- downtube shifters
- aluminum rims
- Michelin Axial tires, looks like 700 x 25.

This would be a great bike for the beginning road cyclist, for commuting (it has mounts for a rear rack), or for getting around campus.

$175 OBO.

I guess weight to some extent. A cast crown that wide would be kinda heavy. I reckon it's easier to make a strong fork crown with the two plates like that.

A lot of people don't like the unicrown style which later became the standard for a while.
