DC has had a strange spate of dirt cheap high-end bikes in the past few days. Must be some sort of scam. I have gotten no responses. $35 Allez, Couple $50 Bianchis, $100 Kestrel, $100 Panasonic Pursuit, etc.

I've never heard of a 515 before. Might be interesting to the early Trek aficionados:

Someone identified a bunch of Specialized Venge bikes inundating the Craigslist ecosystem nationwide. Not sure what's going on, but there certainly seems to be an uptick in fraud.

I know what you mean. I didn't get any response to an inquiry I sent about a $140 Lemond Zurich.

I'm going to look at a $40 Shogun this evening that looks pretty beat but has a straight frame and Arabesque group... all of which may not be in working condition. I saw that C'dale and sent an email.

There's also this $50 Bianchi in Leesburg. Campagnolo Veloce. Too far.

Aero Tommasini

Vintage *rare* Tommasini road bike 56cm - $1199

Here's the ad, in Philadelphia. It's a Tommasini built with special aero tubing. According to this site, only 14 were made, mostly for the Panasonic-Shimano racing team of 1982. This one looks pretty much exactly like the one on that site, just a different color. Same Shimano AX group set. It has some issues, but would seem to be a truely rare and interesting bike. If it were a 58cm I'd be begging the wife to let me go after it.

I was thinking the same thing. But if it were, you wouldn't have posted the ad.

That frame even looks smaller than a 56.

I've always wondered, are these people harvesting phone numbers and email addresses and selling them?

Grrrrr!!! That International is my bike; it's being sold on Cl in the San Francisco area for a bit more than $95. That ad is a phony! It's been reported...

Essentially, yes. If you've ever listed an ad with your number, it's the same drive behind the robotexts, "hey, i was just checking to see if your <item name> is still available? if so, please email me at <rando-name>@gmail.com"

Just getting your phone number is of benefit, they'll sell to spam/scam callers to try to juke you out of cash. It's more valuable to buyers if they can link a phone number to an email so if you only leave email and no phone number, they'll email and try to get you to call or get a number. If you leave a number, they'll text you and try to get you to email.

Welcome to the future!

I top all of my ads with, "Hello human, if this ad is still here, the item is still available. If you text or email asking if the item is still available, I'll know you're a scammer and ignore it."

This has saved me a mountain of grief.

I've also seen people add an extension onto their number and it foils a lot of the SMS spam, but CL never lets me fo it for some reason.

Haha, too true! And I agree about it being smaller than 56. I looked at that aspect long and hard, wondering if I could make it work. It would fit my wife before it would fit me.

1986 Panasonic DX4000 - 52cm - $200 (Jenkintown) hide this posting

condition: good
make / manufacturer: Panasonic
model name / number: DX4000
size / dimensions: 52cm
Nice high end Panasonic DX4000 from 1986. Its missing the logos but if you google it, the first listing matches right up to the color and components. This one has all of its original parts except for the Specialized saddle, All Condition 700x32 tires, water bottle holder, pedals and new Cinelli bar tape. It's 52cm best for riders in the 5-3" - 5-8" range.

Mechanically all of the parts look and work great. Suntour Sprint derailleurs (2x6), Ukai rims (700cc) Sugino Special crank (52-42), Dia Compe G brakes and a fluted seat post.

Some nicks in the paint here and there but overall the bike looks great and is super clean. The frame is high quality Tange 2 steel with Tange dropouts and a Tange fork. Very light and a smooth and quiet ride.

Happy to meet to check it out. Thanks for looking.

Ah, I always wondered why they would do that!

I ended up just using email. I don't like talking on the phone or texting anyway lol

Now seeing that someone above had their ad pictures taken to be used in one of those low priced ads...Thinking maybe it's the same thing that is happening in DC the past few days, and is connected to what you've written about above. Hmm...

I rescued one of these from a dumpster once - it's got a stainless steel main triangle with cast aluminum lugs and (i believe) aluminum stays. Sort of a wacky design, but apt to stay rust-free in rainy/coastal locales, hence the name. This is a nice example.

I went to get that $40 Shogun Cro-Mo 800 triple butted splined bike with Arabesque last night... and missed it by five minutes. It was a legit deal by someone who was moving and didn't want to deal with it... they do exist and aren't all scams... but there seem to be lots of scams or something on here lately. Just as well, I don't NEED another bike... but I'm not going to pass up a deal like that.

I agree it looks nice. I've had a few of these, a woman's model last year seen below. But: It's fairly heavy (~30 lb.), has a claw rear derailleur, and due to the cast aluminum lugs, has a quill seatpost instead of a seatpost binder bolt. Inspect the seatpost very carefully for cracks if the seller allows.

Legacy Aluminum MTB? Anyone heard of this?

This one even stumped the almighty Google.

I'm looking for an aluminum framed MTB to build a winter bike around. Preference is for Cannondale, but then this caught my eye:

https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/r...210576016.html

Seller claims it was built in Chicago, but the Legacy Frameworks in Chicago doesn't build anything like this. Help?
