Looks to be original.
Consider asking for a facilitator in the SF Bay area, lots of BF folks around who could easily help - purchase, arrange with a LBS for packing (to Bikeflights.com specs) and then you arrange shipping via Bikeflights.com. I had a few bikes shipped via Bikeflights and the shipping cost was always less than $100

This MUST Be A Scam...

Vintage Specialized Rockhopper Comp 1988 - $25 (Little Falls)

Great Shape, Low miles, Deore Components. newer hybrid tires , 21'' frame 32'' from top bar to ground
$25 or best offer

This is only a 2-hour drive. Yes, I do have all the bikes I need; but this is one I want. I've done the Google Image Search and found no matches. Somebody please talk me out of this?

OK here goes:

"So you're a guy, and you would actually ride around in public, where your friends might see you, on bike around with a paint job like that?"

That's the best I've got. Good luck!

Miami Vice, baby!

Yeah, I'm thinking soda-blast, gold Rust-Oleum with black letters and graphics. Then put some big, gnarly knobbies on there and make it my dedicated off-road cruiser. Or I suppose it could be my first flip. But I'm really not into that. I'm a lousy capitalist...

Called the number, left a message...

I just can't turn down really good deals like that either, especially when it's something of this quality. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing it was still out there for only $25. I would go nuts, I think.

I've got a mid 80s Orbea too. It's in rough shape cosmetically but a great ride and surprisingly fast. When I tried to pin down the build via the home company in Spain they couldn't help. No good records from those days and they weren't even importing to the U.S. then.

I will say the brazing on mine is so much sloppier than any other bike I have or have had. But mine also has plenty of room for fat 700 x 30 tires it has posted times just as fast as any of my "better" bikes.

Looks like a pretty nice univega. Ultegra 6600, 58cm, $300. Was this sort of bike being made to compete with Trek Lemond bikes?

Congrats, enjoy! I just noticed that rear brake mounted down below the seat stays. That's an old bike, I'm guessing early to mid-80's?

Yup; roller-block cantilevers. State-of-the-art in 1988. My Peugeot Orient Express has them as well. The operating principal is a flat cam that is pulled back between rollers that actuate the cantilevers. It is basically an on/off proposition, as I've never operated one that has any subtlety in it's actuation. I'll probably have to buy a pair of brass rollers off ebay for it, the plastic ones of that era are always brittle now. I did that for the Pug. But maybe the Deore groupo already had them? Fingers crossed...

Here's the bumf, as the Brits say:

Specialized Catalog 1988 Rockhopper Comp

I think that's got a U-brake instead of a roller cam. Great looking bike!

Ah, you're right. The same catalog, under specs, shows "Deore U-Brake with Sharkstooth under chainstay". Oooh, "Sharkstooth"... sounds dangerous!

Nice catch, especially at that silly price. Please tell me you were kidding about repainting it, though.

Only half kidding, actually. Paint looks to be in pretty good shape. Couple scratches on the chainstay that I can touch-up. But Colnago Mixte is right - Do I really want to be seen riding a bike that perty around a neighborhood full of 4x4 pickup trucks?

Thanks mech986! It's been a good year: Peugeot PFN-10 for $30, Raleigh Wyoming for $75, Barracuda A2B for $100, and now this. All from the local CL. I only wish I could bring myself to sell some... I'm running out of space!

But instead I spend the winter building them all into bikes I can't bear to part with, and couldn't make any money on if I did. It's an affliction, no doubt about it. But as afflictions go, this one is pretty benign.

Very limited info on site "Description: Richard Sachs mens bicycle with Velo seat, made in Chester, circa 1980

I thought these were more expensive than the $200-400 estimate would suggest, but not my brand
