NOS 8s Record DT shifters...

"Yes, the curved, 3-spring, Synchro 2 version that can be upgraded to 9/10s. Box is beat, contents are not. At all. NOS, as in never installed...brass is still shiny gold. Cables even.

Last set of (very) clean 8s Record DTs (levers only, not NOS) that I put on the 'bay went overseas at $137+ship.

I'm embarrassed to ask it, but these are NOS & sought after...$150, shipped?"

Looks like a Pulse but I'm not really familiar with these bikes. Would the 21-speed indicate a pre-Trek model?

1971 Raleigh Competition - $575 (Hopkinton, MA)

Date: 2010-07-01, 8:33AM EDT
Reply to: sale-sdetp-1820396111@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

I have reduced the asking price on this bike in hopes of getting it into the hands of a enthusiast who will appreciate its quality and rarity. Feel free to make a reasonable offer. As most Raleigh enthusiasts are aware, the early 1970's Competitions were generally painted black, and wore high end Huret (Jubilee) components. This bike is quite different, although the end result is the same, a quality but affordable racer. Thanks to a helpful CL person, I understand that the serial number places the frame in the 1971 time frame, its a 23" Reynolds 531 fully butted frame, made in the Carlton shop (clearly marked with proper downtube decal and Wienmann white rubber brake hoods), white and turquoise blue paint scheme very much like the early Gran Sport model. I had an early Gran Sport, and this bike is not set up the same way. The Gran Sport was a "club" racer, and had frame geonetry set up for a more relaxed riding experience, with an extended wheel base and a wide range gearing. This bike is set up with a steeper front fork and tighter wheelbase, more for racing. Gearing on this bike includes chainrings at 52/45 and Atom free wheel at 15/16/17/18/19, pretty tight gearing for this vintage. The crank and chain rings are Zeus, the Gran Sport was typically set up with a Nervex (sp?) 52/42 if I remember correctly. The wheels on this bike are set up with Normandy blue label high flanges with Atom QR levers. I am not sure what the sew up chromed rims area, but they have remnants of 2 decals, one baby blue and the other white, and both appear to have been oval shaped, and one looks like it references made in italy. The Gran Sports had 27 inch rims with Hutchinson clinchers if memory serves. The drop outs on the frame are Zeus, with a braze on hanger for the RD, and threaded fender brackets. The Wienmann brakes are CP short reach and the levers have the mechanism that allows for extra slack in the cables when removing the wheels, that was an upgrade at the time. The pedals are Atom 700 and the changers are Simplex Prestige. The saddle is a Brooks B15. I have an extra wheel set with Campy Record hubs, there are new Conti sew ups on the original wheels, extra parts including a vintage Shimano Crane GS RD, large range freewheel and brand new still in package chain, really nice stuff, Todd (508) 435-3679.

He has posted this a number of times. I think the original time he posted it at a low price, got a lot of calls and jacked up the price. He previously
had it at $700. About a year (well maybe 2 years ago) ago someone offered one at $175 and took a few weeks to sell it.

This ad still sounds like he really doesn't want to sell it.

That's a '72 Gran Sport, the one before it is a '71 Competition, I have one in the same color. The competition is a nicer frame and I think it had nicer components. The 71 had reynolds 531 db everything and the 72 gran sport with the same exact colors only had 531 db main tubes. I only know this since I did a lot of research and though my competition was a gran sport before i went to pick it up, very confusing with the color schemes.

Edit: He even mentions the confusing color schemes in that craigslist listing, I guess I should have RTFL.

I guess I should too. I have a Competition and it has a sloping fork, and I couldn't tell from the CL ad if the fork is sloping. And I do remember now the Grand Sport has db
main tubes only.

Certainly the ebay ad is written a lot better .
