If you're considering parting with the wheelset, let me know. I picked up a Nishiki Cresta with busted hubs and I'm looking for a wheelset to put on there.

It looks like the extent of barn dirt and dust coating the frame preserved the bike for future generations...

Let me start over, kinda. When @52telecaster asked
>> Is that a 620?

I was moved to flippantly say, "I'll let you know" since I'd just arranged to pick it up.

By midnight, I had FIVE interested parties for this cheap-for-a-reason bike, some via PM, some via posts, some both. So let's take it slowly.

First, thanks to cb400bill for posting this. I don't usually watch Facebook.

Secondly, the main reason I went after this thing is that I just got a frame sent by the incomparable Mad Honk, and it needs its nakedness covered in parts.
So this seemed like a good idea, and also a way to get a look at an interesting piece of bicycle history.

Thirdly, once I decide what i want to do, I'll take wishes in the order received, putting thumpism first.
I should point out there are two Detroiters in the mix, which might make more sense, given the value involved.
Anyway, just gimme a bit of time, I haven't seen it in daylight yet.

And finally, below are some pictures that might cool the ardor a bit... this bike does show signs of neglect, and I thought "outside storage" but I'm thinking more and more "Michigan Basement," which is a lot worse than it sounds. The whole state is a swamp, and basements are spectacularly damp. In car terms, we're not far from "fright pig." No least because the seat post is stuck but good.

For my money, this is a 1984 Trek 520. There's the head badge, there are the parts -- though we have some nice upgrades, like a Brooks Colt(?) that is unforunately far gone -- and of course we have worn-out parts replaced, like the Shimano Exage rr derailer instead of the Suntour original. OTOH, the brakes and crankset, the front derailler -- it's all in line withe 1984 catalog.

The thing that really surprised me is to see a bike with full braze-ons, like 3rd water bottle and low rider, but no downtube shifter bosses. Instead, it has a stop brazed on to go with the [Suntour] clamp-on cable stops. Which is weird, since in 1984 the 520 was spec'd with downtube shifters. Anyway: Before '84 we've got the wrong head badge and no cantilevers, and after '84 we've got Shimano everywhere.. so I think it's pretty clear. Check the catalogs for yourselves.

Which would make the frame Reynolds 501 and not 531. Plus it's rusted pretty bad. I have no feel for what that means in terms of cosmetics vs. safety issues.

With all that said, here are some pictures. Please let me know via PM if after all this, you still have designs on it. I'm not after money; my goal is to pilfer parts that can grace my new-to-me Cannondale, and I want to do right by all you enablers who got me into this mess. Fair?

cheers -mathias
