Indeed... I am the winning bidder. You don't see these for sale often, especially in small frames, so I decided I'd rather pay a little too much than miss out, There have been too many times I've been the immediate underbidder on a hard to find item and wished I would have bid higher. I'm also buying this for myself rather than for resale. Even though it's a smallish frame, I'm hoping it's no larger than 53 cm.

A few cool entries locally for a change. Also a Panasonic DX 4000, a few Trek graceless, an Ironman, a Bianchi Veloce and a Peugeot Versailles.

>> I’m not sure I buy the Mel Pinto connection.
I hear what you're saying but that PINTO decal would be quite the obscure stretch for someone to fake... It's a $100 bicycle, asking price...
cheers -mathias

Did other Mel Pinto branded bikes just say "Pinto?"

OOOOps, you're absolutely right. I was so taken by the bike i totally didn't see that half the bike was missing, just assumed it was there (you know what they say about assuming something ...) $150 would be a very good price for parts and frame. My bad!

Okay, what's creepier, the "decided to go different route" comment, or the fact that the lid is ever-so-slightly open?

Trek 420 - $200 (Elwood)
22.5” frame, 700c wheels. New Panaracer Pasela tires, cables and Cinelli bar tape. Bike has been totally serviced and is ready to ride. Little rust issue on the toptube, but the areas were cleaned and touched up. Other than that the frame is in amazing condition. Bottles, bag and computer not included.

As it turns out, they did. I asked Wayne Bingham (who runs Mel Pinto Imports these days) about this bike. He responded:
Mel imported lots of entry level bikes during the bike boom days, including mixtes. I even bought and resold a "mid-size" mixte with 550-A wheel/tire size. They all had cottered cranks and low-end Simplex (early) or Suntour (later) components. All the original frames that Mel brought in and branded were sold under the Pinto name. Strangely enough, the first bike-shop-bike I ever bought was a Pinto from Mel's bike shop in DC called The Pro Shop. Most of the singles were actually rebranded Uragos. The tandems were made by Follis or Lejune I believe. According to Mel, he later got a cease-and-desist letter from Ford's lawyers saying he could not use the Pinto name, so Mel changed the branding to Mel Pinto or Mel Pinto Special.
But the short answer to your question is yes, that bike was almost certainly out of Mel's warehouse, and made by Urago.
