I understand how they worked. I sold and installed both types back then. The point is, the early GS road shifters and the early GS MTB shifters were more like each other than they were like versions that came after. The proliferation of Grip Shift on production bicycles--"the MTB ones which are everywhere"--came after the radical redesign of the units.
