Picked this up for my wife from another husband / wife cyclist couple in Ventura about 15 years ago. Bike is still in pristine shape, with all original components. Frame is a 54. Hi Brian,
Yep -- this is a Precision. Hand built in East Rochester, NY in 1986. It was built by me (the fork), Rob Stowe and Dale DuRoss (both used to build for Serotta until I lured them away). Hard to tell if the lugs are Henry James or an imported investment cast lug. We were bouncing back and forth at that time. The tubing is Tange #2 cromoly.
You have a collector's item there -- this steel frame will last for a long, long time with care and the ride will always be sweet, as befits a hand built frame. We probably built about 150 Precisions between 1986 and 1988.
If you wanted to, you could update the components to the current crop. I think the rear end is probably 126mm, so that would need to be spread to 130mm and realigned -- a cinch in the hands of a good shop.
Take care of it and ride it for miles -- bikes are meant to be ridden. I'm glad this one is still on the road.

Sorta-grail bike for me, '90-ish, alas it's pick up only, looks like someone's gonna steal it. Hideous "Navigators" decals, nice Ritchey seatpost, wheelset is a bit garish but at least they're a sane spoke count.
