LANDSHARK women's LAMBSHARK, Shimano Ultegra 27 speed, steel frame - $875 (Amelia Court House)

Posted 2023-04-08 14:51

"This is a LANDSHARK custom women's bike from the builder of Road Shark racers like Andy Hampsten rode to win the Giro De'Italia in the 1980s. It is the best steel, Reynolds 853, with filet brazed joints and Tom Ritchey rear dropouts. Set up with Shimano Ultegra 6500 3x9 group: shifters, derailleurs, brakes, cranks, and hubs. The American classic seat post holds a Specialized BG saddle. Landshark custom made stem and narrower 37cm 3T bars. It is only been ridden enough to wear down the original handlebar wrap and have new tires installed. Very little wear but a fair amount of minor chips to the special paint job of matte metallic blue with squiggles of light and dark blue and puffs of white (wool). LAMBSHARK!

The story of Land Shark bicycles is inseparable from that of its founder, John Slawta. Slawta’s early ambition was to become a professional artist. He received a scholarship from the Pasadena School of Art and Design, but got sidetracked by his hobby—building bicycle frames in his parents’ backyard tool shed. His frames attracted a cult following among cyclists who admired his precisely brazed frame joints and exotic paint jobs. He named his bike frames after the protagonist in an old “Saturday Night Live” skit that played off the “Jaws” movies.

Building bikes became serious business for Slawta and Land Shark in 1986 when he was asked to build several for a group of professional riders, including Andy Hampsten, Roy Knickman and Steve Hegg. Slawta responded by building what became some of the most sought-after

bike frames available. A 1988 letter from Andy Hampsten, then riding in Belgium on one of Slawta’s bicycles, hangs on the wall in John’s Land Shark fabrication shop. “Thanks for the *****in’ bike,” says Hampsten, who went on to win the Giro d’Italia riding his Land Shark.

Word spread from professionals, fanatical amateurs to weekend warriors, celebrities, and the rest of the cycling world. Clients include actors Harrison Ford, Woody Harrelson, Michael Nouri, Olympic volleyball great Karch Kiraly, ex-Laker Billy Thompson, former SF 49er Dwight Clark, and the list goes on.

As Land Shark grew, John moved his shop from Los Angeles, CA to Medford, OR in 1991, and continues building every Land Shark frame himself. Many are surprised to find that Land Shark is something like an army of one. “They ask me if I’ll tell the painter how to paint it, ” chuckles John, “and I tell them that I’m the painter, too.” Riders appreciate being able to talk directly to the man who’s building their dream machine.

This is a good size road bike for someone 5'5" to 5'9". It will go as far and fast as you can take it.

I am retired. Biking is my full time hobby, I ride, build, buy and sell so I can help others get a good deal and then try something new for myself.
Email or call my landline
Thanks,

I'm a sucker for these early mountain bikes. This Nishiki under another name has got the usual nice bits and also seems to sport a bi-plane fork. Looks like a 22" frame. I guess these had a generic Chromo frame? Temped to get it, myself. I'm close to maximum capacity over here, though.

This survivor is a blast to ride. Suntour mountain tech drive train. Thumb shifters, bullmoose bars. This classic won't let you down.

Was curious about the Shimano Sante components on this since I was not familiar with them and did some quick reading up. If anyone out there is interested in this bike/components, it's within my normal driving territory, and I'd be more than happy to help out. If it's up for a few more days, I may end up getting it myself though.. not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

If they fit and you are close drive there now!
Dark blue one is $100 for a 610 which is pretty good, unsure on light blue one but it's only a $100 as well.
It looks like the sticker says "Two ten" on Light Blue. I didn't know there was a two series tourer.

get that bike. I have the same one waiting on - a lot. for one mine has trashed paint and missing a lot - including wheelset. id pay 350 in a heartbeat for one in nice shape like that. the bullmoose bars are SUPER wide btw, much wider than my stumpjumper sport from the same year. its lighter by far as well. its under the radar - not a known brand but super high quality build - send it my way! haha.

From one of the pix, has rippled paint on down tube from a crash (top tube looks fine). How much of an issue is this?

Yeah, it's tempting. Don't see the bigger early frames too often. Saving up for a near-grail road bike for me, currently. So, it's going to have to wait.

Good eye. Might be a deal breaker. Before any purchase, always run your hand over these areas to feel for damage. A front end collision on lightweight steel can cause deformation (a bulge) that can later crack, usually forcing immediate retirement. Even without the frame, salvaging the components might still put this one "in the money."

May not be a bulge but rather the left edge of the fork crown just out of focus. Definitely something to be wary of pending confirmation for the potential buyer.

It's the rippled paint across the top of the down tube behind the lug that is the strongest evidence of front-end impact.

Cool bike, if it were a 22-23" frame, I'd be interested. Member KHatfull did a really cool restoration on one here long ago. His awesome posts have stuck with me after all these years.
