I'm pretty sure the price is for the frame only, fork, wheels, etc. to be had at an equally "optimistic" ask.

Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate this for what it is but the pricing is very optimistic IMO.

Everything is a collectors item to somebody, still doesn't mean they will step up this far in the end.

I may disagree with you. If you check on ebay the prices of what high end steel Fat Chances frames without wheels are going for, this is a reasonable and realistic price for a whole package. Pricing is generally made regarding to rarity and availability of the item on the market, law of supply and demand. What might be expensive for you or me isn't expensive for another person because they have the money to buy it. Also what is rare is rarely if never cheap

Well aware of how much they can be worth, big fan of them.

I get all that, ebay prices and sales are 2 different things.

The ad says he "also" has the fork and wheels

also all the vintage parts necessary to build it.

Like I said, the ask may only be for the frame.

Doesn't sound like a whole package to me.

I didn't say its not worth it but it is very optimistic on the pricing.

How about you reach out to them and make sure whats included.

And while you're at it tell me what you think this is worth?

1982 Merz MTB, 1 of maybe a dozen he built, I think we can agree it is pretty rare.

"Going for" is asking price. Just checked sold prices for Fat Chance frame and fork---the first half-dozen I found sold for under $500 per frameset. Fully equipped Fat Chance bikes may have gone for considerably more, but the first several listings for those show that they sold for "best offer," without specifying the offer amount. Where the selling price was specified, the bikes went for under $2,000.

The merz MTB bike frame is rare indeed. I am not into fat chances but I do agree that you have to make sure what is included. But a package for me can be a nice frame, original fork and wheels. Imagine that fat chance with full xtr transmission with titec stem and seat post, easily near 2500-3000$

just some listings of fat chances bikes on ebay where the prices are way above 1000$

Yo Eddy! Team Fat Chance - 1992 Mountain Bike 26" wheel - Small Frame. ,
Rare Vintage Fat Chance MTB w/ Deore XT, Bullseye, Salsa & Custom Original Paint ,
Vintage 1990 Wicked Fat Chance 19.5" L MTB mountain bike RARE RITCHEY KLEIN YETI ,

As you can see cheap Fat Chance frames and bikes don't exist maybe 10 years or 15 years ago it was the case, you could buy those for much less but times have changed and so did the prices.

Rarity of an item as well as the law of supply and demand dictate the price and the value on the market, professionnal sellers know the value of items. If the item is too expensive for you, then someone else with money will buy it without any problems. Those are the selling prices I guess.

>> "Going for" is asking price.
and

Asking prices are First Amendment exercises and often meaningless.
Selling prices are where the information is. Same with houses, same with everything else.

A pet peeve of mine with used cars: ppl going online to see what similar cars are "going for".
Well, the ones you see online ain't "gone for" anything yet...

cheers -mathias
