One of those builds that just got into someone's head until he couldn't stop spending more and more on the dream. But, yeah, Fort Smith is probably not the right place for an over-the-top "pub bike." If you're on the market for some kind of tiny kegerator, though, this might be the ticket!

Keith Anderson, not Alexander.

Painter extraordinaire, expert framebuilder and plenty more.

His bikes are extremely hard to come by.

FWIW, I believe that's a Stumpjumper sport -- one level down from the top -- still a nice frame.

Yes, That's also a Stumpjumper Sport. The easy giveaway is the color. Full Stumpjumpers never came in orange -- only the Sport, and even then only in 1986, to the best of my knowledge. With a better drive side photo of the full bike components would also be a way to tell. The Stumpjumper used Suntour XC derailleurs, the Sport Shimano.

This adds to my confusion. I always thought it ironic that they had QR seatpost clamps but bolted on hubs.

So, the first three years were Tim Neenan, then Merz. Does this signify the first Merz edition?

As a shop employee, I got a little discount and would have bought the top of the line. This new information is very surprising to me.

I look at my bike a little differently now.

Not sure how the history went with Specialized, but most manufacturers started out doing bolt-on hubs throughout their lineups of mountain bikes, the assumption having been that hollow-axle QR hubs would be too delicate for off-road reliability.

It took a few years before they then went to QR hubs, maybe after some MTB racers switched their own bikes to QR and had no hub-related problems.

There may have been a transition period where the mid-level bikes retained bolt-on hubs while the high-end bikes got QR. I seem to remember QR showing up throughout each brand's lineup in the same model year, though, with the possible exception of the entry-level bikes.
