I saw that one - we obviously check the same cities.

But its a "fake" one. They seem to pop up a lot here. It does look in very nice condition though.

This may be one of the oldest Cannondales ever and a piece of history if this guys story is true.
Wish I was 2500 miles closer and I'd be looking at it. Notice the skinny down tube.

It's not a mixte, just a step through. Good shape and nice lugs though.

No, the ad.

The bike itself is not a true mixte. That panasonic has a traditional top tube which terminates at the seat tube, then has to smaller tubes which continue to the stays.

I know that a proper mixte has the double small tubes as the TT, but wouldn't this still qualify as a mixte since the tt still goes straight through the seatstays?

Speaking of...my building has a lovely, great condition Nishiki Mixte, gold, that's been abaondoned for about 2-3 years on the rack. I'm talking to the building about having it removed and might hopefully end up with it. It's chained to another bike and has been left there for several years, where it wastes valuable and needed rack space.

Not by strict definition. In the Panasonic, the triangle is conventional. In a mixte, the stress points of the top lats are distributed to the stays.

I disagree. If it has mid-stays that brace between the top tube(s) and the rear dropouts then it IS a mixte. It doesn't matter if there is a double tube between the seat tube and head tube or a single. Since it is a lugged connection between the mid-stays/seat tube/top tube it is structurally just as strong (if not stronger) than a double tube going the whole way that is simply tacked or brazed at the seat tube.

Nothing about this is a "fake" mixte IMHO.

I've seen this issue and question come up before, and I understand that it's a grey area...but I agree with Amesja. It's a Mixte, just not a traditional/conventional one. I've seen modern bikes being called Mixtes, I think it was a Pashley, with the single tubed TT. In fact, as I recall, a member here owns one.

There is a flipper in Chicago who is listing every step-through he sells as a "mixte." It was REALLY annoying as I was looking for a mixte and it kept tripping my notification filters. CL doesn't seem to care about mis-categorized postings or outright lies about what they are and doesn't do anything about it.

If the above bike is NOT a real Mixte then I don't know what else to call it. Perhaps it is should be called a mixte-mixte.

On a step through, the stress of the top tube is primarily transferred to the seat tube. And since the join with the seat tube is so close to the downtube, it destabilizes the triangle. The Panasonic does nothing to change that. On a true mixte, the twin rails take the stress of the top tube back to the stays. A much smaller portion is placed on the lower seat tube. In theory, this creates a more stable triangle.

I'm not even convinced those stub-stays are anything but ornamental. Since it is a lugged frame, I suspect the downtube is the exact same you find in a panasonic step through without the stub-stays.

All that being said, I will defer to a true frame builder.
