Greg LeMond Z-Team 1991 Tour de France professional road race team bic - $1000 (Milford, PA)

Date: 2011-08-31, 11:47AM EDT
Reply to: sale-tfuqp-2575146076@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

1991 Greg LeMond Z-Team Tour de France professional road race team bicycle frameset.

This, quite simply, is a piece of history, and a terrific riding bicycle, responsive in acceleration, climbing, and handling.

This is an official 1991 Team "Z" bicycle frameset that was built for Kim Andersen, a Dutch rider who was a racer on Greg LeMond's "Z" team that year. In this year's Tour De France Andersen is the directeur sportif for Andy Schleck's Leopard Trek team. His name is written on the bike frame near the seat post.

This frameset was purchased from Pat Blades, Greg's brother-in-law, through an ad that appeared in Velo-News after the racing season had ended. One of the perks of being the team leader was to be able to sell all of the unused assets of the team as he saw fit. This frameset was built up for Andersen as a spare but was never raced or crashed.

It is made of Columbus TSX tubing and painted in the official team colors, which were a red, blue and yellow colored fade paint job. The bike looks fantastic, but because it had been built up and the torn down, there are a number of small scratches on it., and the Italian paint that was used was not the best because it was anticipated that the bike might get destroyed in the course of the Tour De France road race.

There is a brazed on tab near the headset end of the top tube; this is where the official race number was attached (see photo lower right)

The frame size is 23.5 inches/59.69 centimeters measured center-to-center (seat lug to crankset spindle). The top tube measurement is 58 centimeters, center-to-center.

I have a letter from Bob LeMond, Greg's father, authenticating the origin of the frameset, and a Post-It note attached, written by Kathy Blades, Pat Blades' wife and Greg's sister, commenting on the Italian threading and the Italian origin of the frameset's paint job. This frame was made by Billato Brothers in Italy. Here are a few remarks from Sheldon Brown on Billato:

Roberto Billato and his two brothers, Stephano and Silvano, have built the company their father founded just after the end of World War II into Italy's premier frame building company. And while you may not recognize the name Billato, you are familiar with the family's works of art. Billato frames have won World Championships both off-road and on the road, in countless many spring classics as well as in a little race called the Tour de France. Indeed, there are less than a handful of bicycle companies who can boast such a long list of victories. Which is certainly why many of the worlds most prestigious brands rely on the Billatos for their craftsmanship.

I can include an SR LaPrade seat post and a Shimano Dura Ace head set should you so desire.

Interesting bike. Don't particularly like the auction style listing, but I think it's unique enough to post. I've seen NOS versions of those bars sell for north of $300. I'm thinking the STI is an 'upgrade'. I'd buy it for his asking price if it were my size.

Super Pro Aero

Price may increase as I unfold the history of this bike.

If Lotus, a young company in the early 1980's, wanted to make an impression on the cycling community with their new line of bicycles they certainly did with the Lotus Super Pro Aero. Equipped with the then new aerodynamic Shimano Dura Ace AX group and built with Tange Aerodynamic tubing the Super Pro Aero was the flagship of the Lotus fleet.

Yeah, I saw that Lotus as well. I thought the Dura Ace EX group alone was worth close to asking. If I had the cash I would have grabbed it.

I've been corresponding with the person who owns that Super Pro. It looks like it was one of the actual bikes used for Jim Black's transcontinental record attempt in 1981. The bike was originally pink and was repainted by the current owner. Black's bikes were custom made at some level and were all 64cm frames. The serial number on this bike is unlike any other Super Pro we have on record. I have larger photos of the bike and it appears to be a good candidate for a complete restoration. The current owner changed out some parts and had shifter braze ons added to the down tube. If I had the funds to burn I'd buy it.

Excellent condition 61cm (center-top; 59.5 center-center) Panasonic DX-3000 road bike, 1987. Lugged frame made in Japan. Very light use, with all original parts, including tires, saddle and handlebar tape. One minor paint chip on right side of down tube near shifters, and zig-zag scratching of front of seatpost due to saddle height adjustments (see photos).

Bianchi Trofeo road bike, 57cm. Made in Italy, full Campagnolo Avanti groupo. Completely original 1996 with less than 200 miles on it. Fully lugged, double butted Cro-Mo tubing. Very light, in excellent shape except for rear hub. Rear hub needs repair, would be a great candidate for a single speed commuter bike. $350

So I shouldn't buy it to part it out? When I saw your website link, I thought at the very least you should get a commission for the information he plagiarized.

lol . . . yeah, that happens all the time, at least he sent me some photos, so it's all good. My favorite was the guy who linked to one of my pages and pretty much just put in his ad, "looks like the bike on this page".

I'm hoping the Super Pro doesn't get parted out. I'm trying to figure out where the frame came from, was it just a modified Tsunoda frame or was it actually hand built by someone local, maybe even someone famous.

Benotto Road Racing Bike - $200 (commerce)

https://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/bik/2563771974.html

Vintage Benotto italian racing bike, looks to be from the 1980's. Has shimano 600 components. 12 speed. Chrome fork. Looks to be all original, except for the saddle. Has 2 brackets to mount aero bars, but no aero bars. Still has original pedals with straps. in decent shape for its age. i'm gonna clean it up before purchase, just havent had the time. just needs degreasing. no chain rust. bartape is still good. the hoods could use replacing, getting sticky. tires ok. paint is ok for a 30 yr old bike. has a few scrapes, nothing major. no dents no dings. cool old bike to restore or ss. fits someone about 5'10 ish. rideable as it sits. has cannondale saddlebag, and a ridiculous waterbottle. i dont really know a lot about it, so any info is appreciated. i do know they moved production from italy to mexico in 1979. not sure which one this is. dont even know the model.

Here it is, the zenith of bicycle nerdy-ness. My Concorde road bike with full Mavic SSC group, it is technically not 'period correct' but it's so close and by-far the sexiest thing out on the road.
The Frame: 54cm seat-tube 55cm top-tube. Full Columbus PRX (French SLX) tubing, ultralight frame, thinned short-point lugs, full chromed fork and rear triangle. The paint is in miraculously good condition, with only some slight cable rub on the head-tube.

Wheelset: ultra-light wheelset hand-built with mavic 28 hole hubs, bladed spokes (front) and butted spokes (rear). These wheels are tubular and 7-speed.

Group: This bike is sporting a full Mavic group. Everything. The brakes are the mavic (lazer etched, with matching levers) hidden-spring models. Matching front and rear derailers (front has some chipping). Gorgeous retro-friction downtube shifters, and all the small parts that you wouldn't even expect: mavic seatpost, mavic headset, mavic stem and bars!!! The crankset is the older mavic model (campy record style - with mavic rings!), which I greatly prefer to the hideous starfish crankset. To stay true to the high-end French theme, the cassette and chain are Sachs and the tape and plugs are velox (all NOS).

This bike handels better than you can imagine and rides intuitively. The pictures say it all, but let me know if you have any questions.

This bike is in great condition. It is designed to fit women/girls with shorter stature because of the low standover height. The front wheel is smaller than the back (back is a 700 cm) It would fit someone well around 5 foot 2 inches. Suntour components. Double butted crome molly tange 2 tubing.

Let me know if you are interested. Thanks
