In a classic or vintage market no one is going to pay top dollar for a 69 GTO with V-6 engine transplant! I don't care if that V-6 puts out 500 horsepower and made by the best engine builder in the world, the car was butchered. Believe me I've seen my share of butchered cars and they don't get even close to top dollar.

Bikes are the same way, that bike was butchered, it's no longer a OEM bike. Now if they had put on top flight vintage components like 100% Suntour Superbe group then the bike would be worth more, even if they would have put on top of the line modern Dura Ace then maybe, but not with mid to low end modern junk.

That's just my opinion. I've seen many vintage bikes that went for that same price range that had OEM stuff on it still, that bike in my opinion is way over priced.
I think drivel is to kind of word.
You are comparing a low Myiata to a 69 GTO? Really?

I guess some people think all bikes should be orginal. I would rather have my bike work well, stop well and be able to find parts at almost any LBS. So me too Chris!

I see lots of nice upgrades that make this bike a much nicer and more functional rider. The 610 is FAR from a collectible that would benefit from remaining 100% stock. Bar end shifters would make it more desirable, but they can be had for pretty cheap if you prefer them over dt shifters (I don't).

Since it's local to me I should note that I have no relation to the seller, no dog in the fight.
As I said, drivel is a pretty tame word for his post, but everyone is entitled to his opinion, no matter how wrong it is.

This has gone on far too long and maybe gotten a little too heated. We're all just nuts, pursuing our own ideals of what is cool or interesting. If we all had the same idea of what that was, it would not be so much fun...and would be way too expensive!

I would like to extend the hand of friendship and an offer to Rekmeyata: We obviously have different taste about what belongs on vintage bikes, so any 'junk' along the lines of Brooks, Nitto, Suntour, or Tektro products that you might find on a bike you can send on to me for disposal. I'll pay shipping and skip the customary hazmat fee. Deal?

If it's NOS, according to E-bay it could sell for around $550, but that is E-Bay, there is one right now sitting at $699 plus shipping NOS with only 65 miles on it, and E-bay tends to be higher then street, also the prices don't include shipping. Do I think those prices are too high? Yes I do for that bike. I like Miyata's a lot, I have two and I think their great bikes especially the triple butted splined frameset models as both of mine are. I have a 87 Team and a 88 712, and I wouldn't pay that much for the 712, the Team would take some pondering on my part at those price levels but I probably would. I bought a 84 Fuji Club used with only 5 miles on it and paid $100 for it last year, that bike is about on par with the 612, but even that exact year and model of Fuji I saw later at a retail store trying to get $650...but it's been at that price for 2 years! It must of sold in the last 3 months since I last checked because it's no longer offered on the website. Nor did I think the Fuji is worth $650, probably closer to $250 for the one I saw because it wasn't entirely OEM because that retailer tends to strip the components off bikes and replace with Shimano 600 and sells the vintage components; but I've seen crappy Schwinn Varsity's trying to get close to that kind of money ($200 ranges)!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-excelle...ht_1750wt_1112

Please note, all of this is just my opinion, obviously my opinion is not altering pricing on bikes being sold. If the market is willing to pay such crazy prices for a bike that is no longer OEM with tons of miles on the frame then let those crazy people buy them, but I can't recommend anyone a bike like that for prices like that. I will tell you this, whoever buys that Miyata on Craigslist is going to get a bike that they will never be able to sell for close to that price...unless another fool comes around and there's one born everyday.

By the way Bibliobob, I love your collection of bikes, I wish I had a collection like that. Nice, very nice.

Looks like a 980 Gear but I forget if that was a '84 or 85 model I think '84. Looks small for a 5' 11" rider too.

Had this for quite some time. Don't ride it much anymore so it's time to let it go. It's a large size frame. I'm 5'11".
Mostly Campy parts. I think it's a 1983. Can't really remember; it's been so long.
Asking 150.00 cash money.

That was a sweet deal, someone probably bought it with the intention of reselling for a huge profit.

Here is a prime example of overcharging for a bike. This is a entry level bike intended for teenagers and was intended to compete with the Varsity; see: https://fortwayne.craigslist.org/bik/3180838317.html

This bike is the equal to the above bike, still over priced in my opinion but not as bad as the Raleigh; see: https://fortwayne.craigslist.org/bik/3161868849.html

That is a very low end bike, even the campy system was the lowest end steel stuff they made and they shifted like crap. That bike, along with the ones I showed used just cheap straight gauge carbon steel frames, and note the lack of forged dropouts. Don't get hung up on Italian sounding names, they made a lot of junk stuff in order to compete with the mass marketed junk that was stealing profits. Campy even made a bicycle with their name proudly decaled on the frame...it was a piece of junk made of gas pipe! There were also plenty of bikes that claimed to have been a certain year of Tour D France authorized bikes, they were horrible bikes, they just paid to have the licensing rights to put the Tour d France icon on the bikes.

Oh, I'm aware of what these bike are, but I am just posting these in case anyone is interested. I am in no way inferring that these are anything special or that they are any great deal. You just never know what someone might be into or looking for......Besides, these are CL ads....I have found that often times you can get the price down 50% or more if you approach it right.

***I once bought a junky "vintage 10spd" ( Schwinn Varsity ) for $30, and he through in two bare Paramount frames for free !

Happy Hunting,

Joe

Happy Hunting,

Joe
I wouldn't even pay $30 for the bike in question not alone half the price! I knew a guy who bought a used bike from a garage sale, pretty decent mid level ride, for about $100 and the original owner threw in a aluminum Schwinn racing bike, my friend didn't want the Schwinn because it didn't fit him so he just gave it to me. I rode it for several years before the headtube cracked at the top where the headset was. It's one of the reasons I swore off of aluminum made bicycles.

Coming from someone with a whole 28 posts here at this forum (most of which have been to this and only this thread) that really doesn't mean much...

Hey, no problem.....I was just out trolling craigslist and thought to post some of the things I saw in case anyone might be interested. I thought thats what this thread was for. I didnt think every post here was going to be followed by negativity. If this is upsetting, then I'll stop posting these things...no worries, my apologies for trying to help.
