Hey guys, I'm looking for a semi-decent starter bike for under 150 (I know, I know...). I'm about 6'0" with a 34" inseam, so I've seen that 59cm is a good place to start. Anybody see anything on craigslist lately in Chicago at all?

Ive been scouring chicago CL and havent found anything notable.

Dang, interesting and nice collection. Someone could buy the collection then sell them one by one. Of course shipping would probably be around $4,500 for the lot unless a semi could take it for a lot less.

A wonderful lugged Pinarello cyclocross bike from the 80's. Steel, 55cm frame in very good to excellent condition. Mixture of Shimano/Sachs/Sontour components. Wheelsmith wheels. Includes what you see.

I purchased this bike in the spring while waiting for my Rivendell to come in. A smooth ride and fairly lightweight for a steel frame.

I think this came up in a recent thread. $30grand for 31 bikes? That is ~$967.75 each. I don't see many bikes in that collection that are worth that much. There area few gems, but there are also a lot of "nothing special" bikes.

I think this is an awfully attractive bike for the price:

philadelphia craigslist > for sale / wanted > bicycles - by owner
Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee. More info

Please read the entire post before you reply!!
I will not respond to replies asking if I "still have it".
I will not respond to replies that do not include a valid call back number!!

I believe this bike is a 1995, though I'm not certain.
This is my personal bike that I don't use any more because I no longer commute. This bike is a very tough bike and would be a good bike for fully loadeed touring or as a winter commuter.
Spec:
4130 Chromoly frame. seat tube is 50cm ctc 53.5cm c to t, top tube is 54.5ctc and shoult be good for 5'6" to about 5'10",( I'm 5'10"and that's about the upper limit).
27spd Shimano Tiagra shifters, 105 front derailleur, Shimano Sora cranks, rear derailleur is the older Deora LX, (the crappy pedals are on it only for test rides. you can have them if you want them.)
Avid Shorty 6 cantilever brakes with cartridge pads.
Wheels have been upgraded to a Shimano 40 hole tandem rear hub and a 36 hole Shimano deore LX front hub hand laced with Dt Swiss 2.0 straight guage spokes to Mavic A719 rims with 700x28 Vittoria Randonee tires. I built this bike to be a very seriuos work horse and can handle pretty much any thing you can throw at it. With the right racks it can easily carry 60lb on the back and 40lb on tha front.
The bike does have the normal cable rubs along with a few noticeable nicks and scratches but, it still looks very nice for it's age.
I'm asking $250. Your welcome to make offers but don't be ridiculous.

I'm in the Indianapolis area and search Chicago CL as well, there are much more opportunities in a city like Chicago. I found my Raleigh Tourist there. Be patient and you will find it.

I was the same away and still learning a lot. Suggestion: When you find a bike you like, create a thread on the forum and ask the opinion, put a picture and the asking price. Forum members will respond with their opinion and soon you will be learning more and more. I'm still learning a lot. Good luck.

Is that the same collection that was on ebay a couple of weeks back where everyone decided it overvalued the bikes by about double?

I still think a person could make back the entire investment and probably another 5K if the bikes were sold one by one, especially or maybe even more could be made if he parted out the lessor worth bikes. But admittedly I don't do that sort of thing for a living so I could be wrong. Supposedly their all in mint condition, that means that 70's Paramount could be a museum piece just by itself. The Rivendell is good for at least 3k, the Cinelli Supercorsa another 2 maybe 3k with that 50th anniversary Campy group; the Viner and Benotta another 2k each easily. There are a lot of bikes with Campy parts that could alone get high dollar if parted. Of course that's assuming the bikes and parts are indeed mint condition.

You may be right, but I've seen those bikes I mentioned go for those prices I mentioned on E-bay and none of them were in mint condition. In fact just recently a pretty well scratched up Rivendell frame and fork, no components except the headset, sold for over 2k...which I thought was nuts considering the condition of the paint.

https://fortwayne.craigslist.org/bik/3276617332.html It looks like it would fit me, but I'm unemployed so trying to buy that would be sort of stupid financially, I could if I wanted to dip into savings but I don't need the bike, and if this unemployment thing goes too long I may have to start going into the savings or sell one of the classic cars I have. Fortunately I do have a income stream from rental property but there are bills associated with that stuff and my own personal bills, thank God my house was paid off.

Well hell, that's just my size and I've spent a lot more than that converting a bike that doesn't fit to pretty much that configuration (and am painting it pretty much that color scheme. 6 months ago, had I known what I do now, I'd have been all over that.

Sorry to hear that. I got laid off due to my back injury suffered from a drunk driver I killed...actually he killed himself but could have killed me, you may have read about that here, anyway I can't drive or fly long distances that I need to to do for work, not to mention haul my luggage around. So a year after the accident (6 months after surgery) the company let me go. Combine the fact that I'm in my late 50's, have a potential future medical problem thus no company insurance program wants me on their risk, and my job I did was sort of an odd ball job that has no potential outside the field, I'm having no one eyeing my resumes nor calling me since June. I may have to do something really outside my world like sales to make money. Yikes!!

Hey! That sounds like you have my back! It's a tough job market for us baby-boomers as it is. Add to that just enough of a disabled body, not enough to collect disability, and you have un-employable people like us. I keep praying to win the lottery myself...

Man - that stinks. Hang in there...or maybe think different training and field? My boat isn't quite the same, but during the hot hiring period 4 months back, I was in a wheel chair, and things I should have had went to others. Really frustrating when you'll never get that lost revenue or opportunity in a tiny settlement from someone under insured.

Discussed at some length here:

The Viner would have trouble clearing a grand I think, and Rivs do poorly on the second hand market from what I see. Given the extra costs associated with this one (thirty?) and the larger size of the bikes, I think it is a bad deal as a group.
