I gues I'm wondering about what "it" is. If it's that AD never had anything less than 57cm top tubes, you might be right. If it's that 57cm was the most commonly used Reynolds tubeset, I have no firsthand knowledge (I wasn't building frames or selling tubing in the 70s) but I've suggested it's probably true. There certainly seem to be a lot of 57cm-top-tubed-531 bikes around. Obviously, there were other 531 tubesets used in the 70's.

If you really want to know, this would be a good question for the CR list. Unfortunately, you might get as many different answers as posts.

[h=2]1987 58 cm Univega Gran Touring - $300 (Attleboro)[/h]

This is the ultimate touring machine! It includes everything you're looking for in a touring bike. It is a triple with ultra low gearing and has two bottle cages, a rack (and integrated rack mounts), mounts for fenders, mounts for a front rack, cantilever brakes, and a triple butted frame with crmo fork. It even has the biopace chainrings that Sheldon Brown praises. It features downtube shifters with a deore drive train. If you are looking to do some touring or just for a bike with comfortable touring geometry, then this is the bike for you! $300 obo.

I really love this bike, but it is just a bit too small for me. Best suited for someone 5'8"-6'1"

No idea if this is a deal. Even without the decals, there's no mistaking that this is a Japanese bike.

https://raleigh.craigslist.org/bik/3771415763.html

[h=2]Miyata City bike -- Very retro cool - $200 (Durham)[/h]
This bike is the perfect city bike. A big bike for riders 5'11 or taller. WIth both fenders and a full chain guard you can ride this in a suit and not get a smudge of road grit on you. 3-speed internal hub gives you a gear for every terrain. Front and rear package carriers. It even has a generator to run the front and rear lights (rear light is currently not working), rear view mirror and a bell!. Miyata is a very well known and respected Japanese manufacturer which is, sadly, no longer with us. This is a rare, high quality bike in very good condition. Please mention Miyata in your email so I know you are not spamming me. Thanks for looking!

Not a C&V yet but maybe someday. It is advertised as a museum piece.

[h=2]Women's Bike - Possible Museum Piece - $50 (Woodbury)[/h] This fine woman's bicycle, purchased in one of Menard's special order sales, HAS to be placed on display somewhere.

If you want an example of a top-to-bottom, wheel-to-wheel method of bicycle design and manufacture that yields the cheapest, most useless, bicycle possible this is it. If the manufacturer saved one more nickel, this bike may not have actually been rideable. In this case, it is (was) rideable. How far, you ask?

My daughter rode this bike three times for a grand total of maybe 10 miles. Truly an accomplishment.

This came completely disassembled, which allowed me ample opportunity to examine the true crappiness of each part as it was attached to the bike.

The highlights: 1) the wheels are as far from true as possible while still having the brakes remotely usable; 2) it came with a front disk brake - I am a pretty handy guy but after over an hour trying to adjust I just gave up - couldn't make them work; 3) the left pedal threads are stripped, rounded off such that the pedal cannot be reasonably attached - see above LESS THAN 10 miles!

Why did I not return the bike rather than complete assembly? I am a sucker father and my daughter loved the color. After a couple weeks pounding Craigslist and finding great bikes for her, every one didn't pass her cosmetic scrutiny. I just wanted to get her a bike and be done with it.

But, my loss is your gain. If you are in need of multiple examples of how NOT to design and build a bicycle, this find specimen has them all rolled into one. Be the first (OK, second) to own and display this fine gem of low-end Chinese craftsmanship.

Yep. Came from the factory that way. Fat chainstays need two dents: one for chainring clearance, the other to avoid heel strike.

[h=2]1987 Peugeot Tourmalet - $300 (Cambridge)[/h]

This mid level racing/touring bike is great for getting around the city. I rode this bike exclusively for many years, and even raced it in a couple of triathlons. It's an awesome do everything bike, and it's really quick. 10-speeds.

Rad white color with red/orange accents. New WTB seat. Relatively new wheels, crank, pedals, and tires. All it needs is new grip tape.

Comes with rear rack.

Also, comes with brand new wheel, free/fix wheel chainring, chain, and spare tire. Ready to be easily converted to single-speed or fixed gear.

For the Mixte lovers. This Bobet has been on ebay for at least a year. The seller started out at $1000. Its now at $399 or best offer. Its definitely a very nice bike in very good condition. Lyotard platform pedals. Has a Silca pump too.
