Thought I scored myself a sweet fathers day gift in this Trek 720: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/3874675790.html

First response; seller sounded cool and ready to deal; I had the time to head over the bridge and take a look.

Unfortunately, the bottom of the downtube is rippled just behind the headtube.....Aargh!!!

Seller seemed honest in not noticing it (he did point out a vey shallow dent in the top tube without prompting).

Frustration, but there is always another I guess....

Jon

Nah, he knew the rip was there, he was trying to divert your attention to the the dent and hoping you were an ignorant moron and just buy it.

I saw that one listed, looked like something other than a 720, could a 710 etc.s A 720 has rack and fender mounts and either center pull if early or cantilever brakes if later. Shame about the ripple. Does it track straight with no hands?

Trek 560 Frame/Form + Crankset - $100 (Inman Square)

Frame and fork from a 1987 Trek 560EX. Size is 22.5". Bottom bracket and DuraAce 7400 Crankset included. I had it powdercoated a few years back, as the paint was a bit rough. Rides great, but I'm not using it right now, and I need to get rid of stuff ...

The seller seemed like a good guy and seemed pretty naive, but I guess it could have all been an act...scary to think about...

I am pretty sure it was a 720. I checked the serial number against the list at vintagetrek.com when I was there using my phone (it was between 027821-027870). You can see the rack mounts on the seat stays in the seller's last photo:

I understand the 720 was not sold as a complete bike, but as a frame only, so the purchaser could have outfitted it with the the sidepulls instead of centerpulls. There is no integrated rear cable stop; see e.g.: https://www.flickr.com/photos/franklyn/6273557717/

I actually didn't even ride it to see if it tracked straight. Once I saw that buckled area it was dead to me. The components were basically junk, so with the fram wrecked, I was out.

Bent fork. In the ad, there is a closeup of the headset. It shows that there is a separation between the frame and the lower half of the headset. There's definitely a bend at the crown race.

I don't know what early DA stuff goes for, but there still might be good value in that bike.

This CL listing is interesting, for the last 4 months the seller has been trying to get $375 but has been unable so now it's this price: https://fortwayne.craigslist.org/bik/3875986749.html Interesting pricing philosophy

We have a guy that does that too. Run of the mill Mercier that he floats up and down from $650 to $725. Doesn't make any sense.
