Dirty Alan

[QUOTE=KonAaron Snake;16229711]This isn't an evaluation format,

Aluminum does corrode, but often won't very deeply, which is why polishing often renews it. An Alan is finished in a kind of pre-corrosion, anodizing, like many parts; they're wired like part of a condenser, capacitor, in sulpheric acid with other stuff mixed in for color, if not clear-anodized.
Where I worked we dissed aluminum consistently, telling all customers of catastrophic failure, with my bias ranking Alans higher than vituses. For the next many years all the European pros rode aluminum bikes, although these had beryllium added. Lambert enjoys a consensus.

there's a crucial part of that eBay listing that you may have missed: "Lieu de livraison : Remise en mains propres uniquement" In other words - no shipping, pickup only. There's lots of great deals on French eBay, too bad all the best ones are always "pickup only."

Fortunately that's just a little too big for me. I could make it work, but at least I have an excuse this way. If that thing hangs around until after Christmas, then I'll be all over it (hopefully it won't).

If it lasts till the 1st of the year, I'm good to go as well.

I can't imagine it will last a week though.

Really? A $1000 frameset won't last a week on CL?

I give it a 50/50 on lasting just one week, as it's at least a $3k frame for $1K (though maybe the less than 180 lbs for a 58cm canti frame might limit the market a fair bit). I saw a few 753 waterfords on the Milwaukee and Madison listings this summer that lasted about a week, but for slightly less $'s.

I'll be watching it, and considering how I could scrape that together without the wife noticing, let me know if any of you have ideas ;-)

That Waterford is more like a $4,000 frame if bought new. I bought a used custom Waterford a couple years ago for a bargain. When I priced out the cost of a new one with similar features and paint job, it would have been close to $4,000 and it didn't have any chrome. I would be in the market for that one except I just bought a used Gunnar and don't think I can sneak another frame past my wife. Not wild about the color anyway, altho it might look nice when built up.

Well.. I guess I don't get why a steel frame would cost $4000, custom or not.

Shoota,

Do a little research on the topic.

There is such a wide variety of options available to bicyclists.

The American custom builder offerings are as varied as I have ever seen them in the United States.

Incredible quality, incredible choice.

Please remember, not everyone chooses to ride $300 CL "finds."

....and there are some really tempting deals on these "custom" framesets if you get a little lucky and know where to look.

Ride one - it might help you understand it.

As far as why it would be expensive...the tubing itself is pricey, you have equipment, rent, paint, and a lot of time involved. They aren't mass produced in a factory...they are spending time with you on fit, on discussing options, and then building them in low quantities. Still - they are priced similarly to high end mass produced CF. None of these guys are getting rich.

I rode my custom Marnati yesterday and every time I ride it, I wonder why I bother with anything else. It does make a difference.

Everyone has something that they don't mind spending money on. Whether it be bicycles, golf clubs, watches, car rims, cable tv packages, you will spend money on something that another person would consider a waste.
