Proteus Info
As I'm gathering more information about these great bikes and the somewhat amazing company that built them I figured I'd pass it on here.
I know there are a few Proteus owners out there and nowhere near enough information in any common place. For all the bikes they built and as many prominent builders are alumni of the shop or started with their kits and book you'd think Proteus Design would be better documented. It's almost easier to find out about some obscure mid-century Italian guy who only furnace brazed in a converted hermitage in the mountains, than this substantial and very influential American company. First up is a Flikr page with the 1978 Proteus Guide to Frames and Framebuilding Products. Enjoy. It'd be nice to see what everyone has, and try to gather it up in one place so please, let's see what we can collect here. |
You'll want to make contact with forum member Squadcar, who ran the shop where they made the bikes (I'm paraphrasing from memory).
He recently appeared offering information and history about Proteus. It might be nice to see a hosted chat of some kind (mods?) or a sticky if enough people are interested. I hope you will take advantage of his offer. |
