What are they going to be installed on?

mudboy 07-26-09 08:53 AM

$12 shipping is the real crime.

tmh657 07-26-09 09:03 AM

Interesting last name James. How do you pronounce it?

Either a Colnago Mexico w/ full Super Record or an early 80's De Rosa w/ full Super Record and some pantographing. I actualy need 2 pairs.:(

I tried negotiating the shipping charge as the seller previously charged $6 but I'm not sure if the $6 was to the U.S. or not. If I were to ship those same hoods from Tampa to Seattle via Priority Mail it's run $4.75 so I guess $12 isnt too badconsidering they're coming from Italy.

(Ru) as pronoiunced in 'run' and 'Gary' as normaly pronounced. RuGary. Make a light fist and then extend your thumb, index, middle finger and join then together. lightly shake you hand as pronounce it. Seriously, it helps.

The De Rosa is pictured as purchased, I've yet to decide what to do with it.

I bought a pair for $25 a month or so ago, because those on my '82 Bruce Gordon have little cracks underneath. It's soon going to be time to retape the bars, and I thought I'd have a pair on hand in case one broke.

I'm now wondering how to properly store them untill I need them, to keep them supple. In a glass jar with high humidity inside?

I think any sealed container will do, mine are going in a doubled up zip lock bag. I doubt I'll install mine but I wanted them for future purposes. A few months back I bought a pair of 25+ year old NOS CLB hoods that were in their original plastic packaging. They were very soft and supple when removed from the packaging.

Jim, you know... that DeRosa looks like just my size. If you ever decide to sell it, please contact me 1st. thanks!

Hood preservation: in any airtight container - and add some talcum powder. Works great - I have had 6 sets stored this way for over 8 years and they're still just as fresh as the day I got them.

Installation: coat insides lightly with KY Jelly (have your wife or significant other buy it for you). It's water-soluable, so there will be no issues later on as there would be if you used something petroleum-based such as Vaseline.

Hmm... The world logo repro hoods are now going for $50 a set with another $7 shipping. (Or more.)

I think with that little price difference (even on hood sets that go for $80) I'd rather pay the extra $20 for original gum shield logo hoods.

$50 for repros is a bit much...

Without a doubt.....Shield logo NOS hoods seem to be varying from $40-60 plus shipping. Considering what hoods go for it may be advantageous to buy NOS levers with good hoods and reselling the bare levers.

unterhausen 07-26-09 03:38 PM

I think pricing hoods for my campy levers was the first shock I got in the C&V world. Both pairs of mine were just dripping off the levers. I still haven't gotten any.

Me, too. I bought four pair while in London (where I got bitten by the CV bug) and they were only about the equivalent of $20 a pair. A couple years later I was in the market for a pair for another bike and was amazed at the increase!

Consumables are where it's at in CV. Just take a look at the prices for NOS chains and rings on Ebay!

Problem with that is it can be really difficult to get the hoods off without tearing them.

The $50 World Logo repro hoods are actually not a bad deal, in my opinion. I have two pair, one on my '71 Colnago and one in reserve. They're quite well done. Whether or not they're a better deal than NOS Shield Logo hoods really depends on the bike. On a '71 Colnago they're a nice detail, and Shield Logo hoods just wouldn't look the same. I think the $50 hoods are a reasonable alternative to NOS World Logo hoods that may not last very long anyway and may tear when you go to put them on. If period correct isn't an issue, I'd just as soon use Modolos or some other reasonable substitute, especially for a rider.

I need brake hoods! I found a usable set on some rusty levers for a euro recently, but I can't afford anything in good condition :(

I agree. If they were for an older bike where shield logos would be out of place I'd go with globe repros before I went with NOS shields.

I'll give an update when my new hoods arrive.

For a lot of bikes from the late 70's into the early 80's, the shield logo hoods would have wound up on the bike anyway when the hoods were replaced. For those bikes - and I have several - I don't sweat it.

RapidRobert 07-26-09 05:50 PM

I just waited and my shield logo hoods came up on Ebay, with a wierd end time. That helps. Now it's on to the red Alfredo Binda toe straps! 8^0

Citoyen du Monde 07-26-09 06:02 PM

I sold about 20 pairs of Campagnolo hoods at le cirque du cyclisme. I sold the white ones at $35 a pair and the gum rubber with shield for $40 a pair. I will be bringing some sets with me to Larz Anderson in two weeks time.

Keep your eyes open on Ebay - I will be listing a RED pair in the next couple days. Unused, but threaded through a pedal set once.

dbakl 07-26-09 07:13 PM

Thankfully, I still have 3 or 4 pair I bought over the years for next to nothing.

I get poo pooed all the time, but the original hoods are still on my '84 Cinelli and I've been ArmourAlling them every year or so. I love that stuff.

retrofit 07-26-09 07:33 PM

$55 is a bargin! Earlier this year my LBS quoted me a price of $120 for a pair of NOS Campy gum hoods (shield logo). Ended up getting a pair of black Campy hood from Campy Oldy for about $40.
