Miyata 912 - All Suntour (year & wheels ? )
I acquired a Miyata 912 54cm a few months ago. I've been cleaning it up and exploring the accuracy of its Suntour original equipment (deraillers & shifters) and other parts. The bike looks exactly like the 1984 Miyata catalog model (black) and the serial number starts with an "M" ; but it has all Suntour equipment.
I know Miyata used Suntour equipment but all the 1980's Miyata catalogs show the 912's with Shimano 600. Also the bike came to me as a fixer and with rotted tires and 27" wheels (Arraya rims 1 1/4"), problem with that is only a 1" tire provides adequate clearance and again all the 1980's Miyata catalog 912's have 700cc.
The brakes strike me a little odd in that they are Shimano SLR's that appear to be of poor quality or badly worn. I tried replacing them with a set of Suntour Superbe brakes but their reach is too long and won't make contact with the rims.
The Suntour 6 speed cluster gearing is 12-22
The bottom frame rail on power side has a decal reading "Suntour Equipped".
Could the bike be pre-1980 or is it a 1984 "Suntour Equipped" version that someone decided to put an old set of 27" wheels on and changed the brakes to make them work. ?
All thoughts are appreciated. Thanks
