Hello there and happy New Year to all!
Regarding the above, that is absolutely incorrect. This is a wonderful forum and I have a permanent link to it on Lovely Bicycle's sidebar as a resource for readers. My absence has been due in part to time constraints, in part to feeling that I don't have much to contribute, and in part to having forgotten my password after some time went by.
Once again I wish everyone a Happy 2014, and thank you for keeping this great place going.

In approximately 1979, Avocet saddles (marketed by Americans, made in Italy) became very popular. The concept of the plastic shell with a small amount of padding and a leather or vinyl covering was proven to be worthy of mid- and high-level bikes. Brooks leather saddles were, by comparison, expensive and heavy. They were gathering a passé image. They responded with the saddle above. As you now know, it didn't achieve wide acclaim, though, for all I know, it was decent in that genre.

My Brooks sometimes smells like crap after a good, hard ride. Maybe they used it somehow in the tanning process?

Any saddle made by Brooks is a good saddle as long as it fits you and is comfortable. The problem with Brooks saddles is that some pinhead owners tend to over proofhide them and over tighten the tension bolt. Thus turning them into pain devices.
