when did Araya make bikes? what is Araya 631
Ok I picked up this bike for $20. Turns out it has realy nice chrome under the ugly paint. I take off the cheap suntour stuff with the strap on down tube shifter and put on some campy record stuff I have around. change the weinman brakes to shimano tourney. replace the no name seat with a vetta. Put suntour stem shifters on it because I cant find my campy bar ends. So heres what it looks like . Any body know when did Araya make bikes, I never even knew until I saw this one. And for the alloy experts I know we have here what is 631? Is it like reynolds 531 but 1 more of the 1st part?

Great looking bike. Rides nice, too.
I've seen others discuss the "631" issue. I don't think there's any material relationship with the Reynolds' well-known tubing. Probably it was a little marketing ploy, piggybacking on the "531" legend in the look of the decal only, back when Araya made more than rims.
My bike/frame strongly resembles yours and is a reasonably light one, probably a straight gauge or double-butted, seamless CR-MO steel. Like I said a very fine bike to enjoy for it's ride qualities if not it's honorable, obscure heritage.
Mine is a 1976 model; yours looks a bit later, maybe 80ish.
What is your serial number? Wheel size?
