Dreams Do Come True

...

Actually, I dig the blue bar tape that's on it. Nice find!

But...black Tressostar would also be cool.

Tigerprawn 07-28-09 11:23 PM

Is this the one from Craigslist in Sebastapol? If so congrats! I was extremely tempted to drive out there but it was too far for me.

Dyermaker 07-28-09 11:25 PM

Im glad I didnt sweat it, its too small.

Tigerprawn 07-28-09 11:27 PM

Would been perfect for my size, but alas too much driving involved.

Gary Fountain 07-28-09 11:38 PM

Congratulations on finding that most important bike. It can take many years of searching.

Yes it was. I could be fired tomorrow but I didn't want to give this up.

I hope this finally satisfies me.
No n+1 rule this time.

Wow, looks like it's in great shape too. I think bar tape to match either the yellow or gray in the seat tube would be perfect.

Beautiful bike, congratulations.

Congrats on your "Holy Grail" score

Nice!!

As for the bar tape, definitely the gray, if you can find such a color in bar tape.

melonbar123 07-29-09 12:39 AM

Anyone care to tell me more about this bike?

What do you want to know about it? I think most assume you knew all about it since it was "THE" bike.

I guess I was overly excited
What I meant was that there's so many things that I want to add/clean up/upgrade on the bike that I can't decide. I was hoping that people could offer some suggestions on where to start "second" ("first" was to ride and that was amazing).

I wouldn't change any of the original parts, your bike has some really really nice components on it. You could probably dig around for some brake hood replacements. Suntour Superbe was the top of Suntour's heap, so in a period correct sense there is not really any upgrading. You could upgrade to some nice brake pads.

What I would do is overhaul everything, fresh grease in the hubs, bottom bracket, headset and even the pedals. New brake and shift cables, clean up the chain and take a look at the tires and tubes. I would treat the frame with some framesaver and polish and wax the paint. Don't forget to lubricate all of the pivot points on the components with something like tri-flow.

What you add depends on how you want to use your bike. You could add a rack and pannier bags for commuting or camping. The possibilities are endless really, just take time to think about your goals and plans for this bike.

Thats a really awesome bike and well worth the few extra steps.

I finally found the bike I needed:

1983 Trek 700

~54cm
Reynolds 531c double-butted CroMo tubes, forks, stays
Full SunTour Superbe group set; SunTour Cyclone M-II rear derailleur
Campagnolo Nuovo Tipo front and rear hubs
Cinelli bar and stem

Pretty bike, looks agile just sitting still, I'll bet it is..

Most important: What color bar tape?

Khaki. It will make the accent stripes on the main tubes and the headbadge jump out.

High Fist Shin 07-29-09 06:25 AM

Bar tape color?

Grey. If you can find it. Rivendell is out.

+1 Yellow or gray to match the seat tube.

Fix the H'bar tilt and jump on. Isn't that bar tape is gray already?

Seconded. I don't think gray would look good personally. Or leather with a matching honey leather Brooks.
