vintage folding trike question

I have an 1940's Columbia folding trike project find that I was forced to chuck the wheels from due to their condition. They have a hollow axle and wingnut that holds them on and the drive wheel locks into the axle with 3 little pins that slide into holes in the hub flange. My question is this: Worksmen cycles had trike wheels that look like they would work but the axle diameter is listed as 5/8". Was this the size used back in the day when the Columbia was built? If anything this looks to small for the axle. This trike was massively overbuilt could the axle be larger?
