Giant CFR 1 (cadex)

Just picked up one of these in decent shape; quite refurbish-able. Dates on the rear DR indicate 1994 manufacture, but all the references I find on this line indicate 600/ultegra components.

This one has straight 105... 8-speed rear end.

Actually reminds me of the Trek 2120 I had some years back; carbon main tubes bonded to aluminum stress points. I'm thinking these retailed for around 1,500, but probably went out the door closer to 1000.

Just finishing up a Raliegh "technium" roadster I acquired almost a year ago; this one fairly decent with Suntour components and downtube shifters. Apparently a 1979 vintage from the codes. Just need to re-wrap the handlebars.
I find these horizontal-dropout bikes sell quickly as the single-speed fad is still pretty active here.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it? what is the going price for these bikes in decent shape? There is a cadex 1 listed locally for 325. I rode it. it seems mechanically fine but cosmetically it sucks as it has nicks, scrapes everywhere.

Let me know...

Richmond swap meet in Feb had one for $400 and no takers, in nice shape, 600/Ultegra group.

The Cadex, the Trek 2100 series, and the Specialized Epic were all right there. An Epic just sold for $400 in Raleigh CL, black and yellow with full 600 STI group. It lasted a day. I think they were all early 90's, and I covet any of them.

Older model-wise, there was a Giant before that, almost identical to two Centurion models, the Carbon and the Dave Scott Ironman Carbon, around 1988. There is an Ironman Carbon for sale in Milwaukee on CL for $400 and he'll probably get it. Alan made the Carbonio, too, about the same time.

BF member Otto Rax did a research paper on older CF bikes, but I've not read it. If you send him a PM, though, he may be able to give you the info you need.

this one has shimano 105. judging by what you said robbie, it probably is overpriced but not by a whole lot.

I've got no problem with that price.

I was absolutely ready to pull the trigger on that one in Raleigh, but I live 35 miles away. I missed another Epic, burgundy/purple frame, for $350 about 2 hours away. They are absolutely holding their prices. There was a 2100 frame on eBay recently and I think it went over $212. At no time have I seen a clean "vintage" CF bike that I didn't think was worth $350. Add STI's and you're kicking $1200 bike butt.

I'll continue to covet an Epic, a 2100 series, or a Cadex. If Otto rode slowly by on his Alan, I'd consider tossing a cinder block to get that beauty, too, 60cm or not....

There are certain bench marks for pricing bikes. The benchmarks I use for minimum prices are:
Brand name rigid fork MTBs: $100-$125
Index, downtube shifter, road bikes: $200
STI shifter road bikes: $300
Any STI shifter road bike in rideable condition, STIs working OK, below $300 is sold in less than a day around here.
When you start adding extras, like Ultegra/600 shifters, carbon fiber frame, etc. the prices start rising.

Hehe--- That's mine.. As far as I can tell, all that stuff is cosmetic; a good cleaning, perhaps a bit of wax, and a bit of clear lacquer on little dings and you're good to go.
