My UO8 reconditioned and reassembled. The saddle and post are not original and the new cables have black casing instead of white. Any suggestions for quieting the Mafacs? Thanks for the help in identifying and dating it.

Top quiet the Mafacs "toe-in" the front of the brake pads towards the rim using an adjustable wrench to bend the brake pad mounts. Don't bend them too much, just flex them enough to get the pads not quite parallel with the rim. When done, the front tip of the brake pad should touch the rim before the rest of the pad. This always worked for me and didn't reduce the efficiency of the brakes any. And no more of that "squawling" from the brakes!

Replace the Mafac pads with KoolStops, which have a toe-in adjustment by virtue of their hemispherical washers.

Your UO-8 looks great; I like the blue tape with the orange paint. I also like the lack of a chrome pie dish spoke protector and chainguard.

Thanks for the replies and the advice. I'll give the period pads the toe in treatment as I won't be riding the bike often or hard. I have a blue anodized Zefal pump from the period that looks good on it too! The spoke and chain guards were a bit banged up as well as rusty, so I didn't put any effort into them. The bike looks more "serious" without them. Happy Pedaling!
