Looking for a shift lever item

I have run into a problem while rebuilding my 1968 Atala Record which I hope the membership can help me resolve: I lost/misplaced a small washer which appears to be a critical part of the Campagnolo Record down tube shift control system. In the Campagnolo Cat. 16, this part is called a friction control plate, item #174. It is a small black washer-like item with a rectangular hole in the middle. This plate holds the control lever in place on the lever collar, and over this plate sits the cover plate through which the friction adjusting wing nut screws into the collar.

Sadly, the loss of this item creates a problem in shifting gears, and I do not wish to replace the entire shifting mechanism in view of the prices Campy parts are bringing on eBay and other vendors. Finding this part with your help with be deeply appreciated. I have checked vintage parts purveyors with no success.

Thank you for listening.

Hello I asume you put the one you have on shifter for the rear derailluer, so you can atleast ride. that part should be fairly easy to locate. is it flat or convex? a suntour part may work.

Thanks for your quick reply Bianchigirll. The part is flat. I had already written to Ochsner describing this item. However, three weeks later I have not had a reply. Perhaps it's too small an item for them to be concerned with. If nothing turns up, I'll use your suggestion.

do not forget to troll ebay. it maybe easier (yeah I know you vintage guys are frugal) to get a new shifter for cheap

This may sound weird, but can you make one? A square foot of aluminum can be had for $3 and you can cut i with a utility knife if you take your time. A dremel would work too.

Where are you located, though, in case someone finds an extra?

Although you could probably pick up a complete set of shifters on eBay for about the same price.

got a picture of one? I have a few spare shifters (I've been converting to retrofriction) and
could possibly find and send you one.

Marty

lotek 08-21-09 08:17 AM

never mind, just reread your post and I see it's part 174. duh.
let me double check the parts I have and if I have one I'll send it to you.

Thanks Marty, I'm all set thanks to dbakl whose help has saved me the cost of replacing the entire shift lever set. And thanks to all of you on Bike Forums who responded to my cry for help. You are appreciated.
