Cone replacements
 

Hey, does anyone have a line on where I could fine a replacement Suntour SL (or possibly it's just generic Suntour?) drive side cone? I've bought an entire hub (!) just to source one, but having now received it I've found it to be pretty crunchy. It's never been laced, but I'm guessing when I get a chance to open it up tomorrow it will be corroded... I seem to remember stumbling upon a site that had a huge array of cones in it's parts list, I think from this forum. It wasn't a bike site, it was just a site for a manufacturing company by the looks of things, which listed a lot of cones for races. Any help on that link, or if anyone has one lying around and I'd be very grateful.

You could be lucky. the axle nuts might just have been overtigtened a little by the PO. Don't spin the axle too much before you get to open the hub for inspection. You might be damaging your cones and races further by doing so. I cannot see why it would be rusty if the hub is NOS like you said, unless it was in a shop or vasement that got flooded at one time or stored in a damp place for years. Otherwise, the OEM grease in the hub bearing areas should have protected it from rusting.

that's what I've bought. superficially it's in a lot worse shape than whats laced to the mavic rims on my bike :( haha. I've gently turned the axle a bit (no more than 10 complete rotations I promise), and just that seems to have maybe made the crunchiness a bit less obvious, so hopefully the feeling is from some seriously dried out goopy grease and possibly being a bit over tight, and not any permanent damage. Will report back, hopefully positively

You'd be surprised at how bad a hub can feel when spinning it by hand yet, upon disassembly have good cones and races.
