new new custom vintage purchase

hi. everyone. when it rains it pours. seems like great bikes are popping up lately. anyway, i just purchased this custom roland della santa bike. thought it was very interesting as the lugs have a very small cinelli flying c on them. also the bottom bracked shell is a cinelli as well. love the way the bike rides. not sure of the history of the bike but the guy i bought it from was the original owner in reno and i believe a semi pro racer. anyway i thought he kept it in fantastic shape for an 80s bike.

mkeller. thanks again for helping with the pics. those close ups are great. i was hoping to get that little cinelli c to show up. ive never seen one before on a lug but then again....i havent seen alot of things that most of the vintage experts know about on bike forums. i heard that this guy ii bought it from actually beat davis phinny a race somewhere. that was pretty impressive stuff to me even though he said davis was very young at the time.

Very nifty there, Joe! (Does anyone use the word "nifty" anymore?)

I particularly like the EM-inspired paint scheme.

Incidentally, that is an NR FD (and I'm not sure of the headset), otherwise, it looks to be a solid SR groupset. Excellent catch.

The headset says record, but it's obviously on the modern side.

I see it now. 9-speed era, I'd guesstimate; my 9-speed Veloce hubs use the same font for the group name.

thanks. well i bought the frame with bb, headset, fork, put on an extra super record set i had with cobalto brakes. i could have used the more time appropriate c record group but since this does look retro, it thought the super would just look better. besides, i had it already and didnt want to go look for the c record group. went up to reno and paid 400.00 for it which may seem like alot but i really wanted a della santa and the super record group needed a good home.

It's actually a Record FD - IMO it's quite possible it's from the period when that would have been the derailleur used with the SR groupset, prior to the introduction of the black-armed version.

(It's a great bike.)

True, but wasn't the second-gen RD released at the same time the SR-specific FD was produced?

No, the second-gen. rear pre-dates the front. The rear with the script-logo-on-black dates from circa 1979, while the front derailleur with the black arm is circa 1983. Both appeared in year-end trade show catalogs from late in the previous years ('78 catalog for the rear, '82 for the front).
