BMX freewheel
BMX chainring bolts

The rest depends on how you plan to do it. You gonna leave it as a 126mm out back or go down to 120mm?

Not really sure to be honest.

I've been reading as much info as I can, but it all just spins in my head.

What difference would it make at the end of the day ?

When I do my SS conversions I resapce to 120mm because thats what alot of them come from the factory as. 120mm spacing allows for a more precise chainline but the drawback is the rear wheel needs to redished.

Whatever you decide, do not remove any brazed-on fittings or the derailleur hanger, to save weight or streamline the appearance. At some point, you may decide to restore it to OEM. Or you may decide to sell it, and removing the fittings will limit your market (and price).

Forgot to add that.

I am not going to do it in a way where I can not go back to making it original.

You've got to think a little about the bike's use. Are you going to commute? Work bike? Go to school bike? Are there hills or is it flat? Are you going to ride it in the winter, as this may impact pedal choices? Maybe a MKS Sylvan Touring with straps would work well. I use a medium cage. Think about gear ratios. I usually ride a 42t front ring for off road and trails, but I just finished a bike with a 46t front and 17t rear. This is plenty fast on local routes, including streets. I don't know what you are going to do with the bike, just plan accordingly with gear ratios. For tires, I stick with Continental Gatorskins on the street/paths. Ritchey Speedmax's for off road. Also, don't get worried about this whole thing too much, it isn't rocket science. Just make sure you get a good chainline and you'll be just fine. On a Miyata 310 you shouldn't have a problem with chain tension, as there is plenty of room on the ramps in the the rear drop outs to keep it correct. One final item, you were planning on riding with front and rear brakes with a single speed I'd assume.

So the list might include:

single chainring/bolts for the front
single speed chain - KMC single speed chains work fine and are cheap
bmx freewheel/cog- ACG Claws or whatever is on sale
tires unless you're already good with that
pedals you are comfortable with
and for goshsakes front and rear brakes with a single speed
No dremeling/grinding on frames is required!

PM me if you have other questions. If I can do this, and I have quite a few times, anyone can.

Thanks for the reply..

Well, i've got about 6 bikes that i've picked up over the course of the last month. LOL. You can find numerous threads. So i've got the types of riding covered.

Reason why I want to build this one up as a SS is because although vintage, the frame is in rough shape cosmetically, which makes it a good candidate for commuting to work and not worrying too much if for some reason it gets stolen (I work in Midtown Manhattan). The commute in general will be mostly flat, except for when I get to the bridge to cross over into Manhattan. Going UP on either side is KILLER! (Probablly also due to the fact that i'm out of shape and haven't conditioned myself on a bike yet. lol)

I already have a Univega Grand record in MINT condition that I bought off CL that was converted to SS. I have been toying the idea of swapping out the SS components from that one, onto the Miyata frame but all the stuff is brand new. New wheels, New chain, Crankset, Riser bar, new stem, etc...I bought it like that. So I'd rather build up using the Miyata parts. The less eye candy, the better.

Okay. So I'm going to assume this is the freewhell I need:
https://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...Freewheel.aspx

But what do i do about the rest of the space on the hub to make up for the missing gears ?

And what width sized chain do I need? 1/8 ?

Here's the link to Sheldon Brown's single speed pages.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html

The Shimano will work fine, but read through Sheldon's site for the real info. That's how I learned. I am putting together a single speed mountain bike for the fall fishing season, and I have an identical Shimano on that bike. Also, the 1/8 should be fine. Look for a KMC on the Jenson site or go to Ben's Milwaukee Cycle site. You really can't miss.
P.S. That hill will certainly get your legs ready for something. It is a beaut.
