Campy old-style 5-speed freewheel unobtainable?
Greetings from Maine. Freewheels and cogs take a beating. They are subject to constant assaults of grit, sand, and mud. They are raked over from careless gear shifting. It is not advisable to break them down (wisdom from Sheldon Brown), and the gear teeth are where the torque-action is. So there it is: they are beaten on, chipped, and worn down, and maintenance on the innards is difficult while there is nothing you can do for the gear teeth (save ride on sunny days and shift lightly). Are vintage Campy 5-speed freewheels, to complete a 70s NR group set, now nearly impossible to obtain?

I see the Campy 6-speeds on ebay and never took the orig. freewheel off my NR-equipped '78 Motobecane Grand Record. Thank you for clearing up a thirty-year misimpression.

Pretty much anything vintage freewheel wise is available on ebay. With new 10-11 speed cassettes ranging in price from $150 up freewheels are a bargain!

I find vintage 5-speed freewheels without too much trouble. These are my latest finds:

The one on the left is an Atom, 14-15-16-18-21, the one on the right is a SunTour Pro Compe, 14-15-16-17-18.
They are out there, you just gotta find them.
