Broke All My Rules, Interesting "Bonderized" Frame Superia
OK, I picked up this Superia from a neighbor. It violates all of my purchase rules, as it has a heavy steel frame, steel rims, and a cottered crank. So why did I buy it? Well, it does have some interesting MAFAC brake levers. Secondly, I really like the frame construction decal. It almost looks like a Reynolds 531 decal, similar colors. But it says: Guaranteed Built with R.C. Bonderized frame tubes fork stays. WTF!
I am guessing the bike is a 1972 model Made in Belgium, lugged frame, low end Simplex plastic RD (at least the FD is better), MAFAC racer brakes and interesting levers, alloy bars and stem. Paint is as original (you can see it was not too carefully applied with the runs on the lug). No rust anywhere.
Either this bike will go SS, or I will just clean it up for its next home. It will be one of those at best break even moves.
The bike did come with the original factory brochure and parts list, pretty neat. I need a scanner to share those items.

Maybe Superia to a Huffy or Roadmaster. Weighed the frame, just about the exact same weight as a U08 I have laying around.

I did a little google search on bonderizing. Apparently, it is a rust preventative treatment. I know the inside of the frame is incredibly clean. Components and parts are typical low end, just about identical to my 1975 U08. The only things better than the U08 are the handlebars, stem and brake levers.
And it has normal threading.

I figured I would remove that saddle for another project, and replace it with an old leather AGDA I have off a U08 donor.

Yes, that would look pretty cool. I was all giddy about a really low end bike recently but I talked myself out of it.
It was a Huffy or Murray olympic bike for $20.00. Basic steel crap everything but it had these hilarious plaques all over it and an sweet chain ring. I still sort of wish I had bought it.... but I doubt I would have ridden it much if at all.

Just a note. "Bonderizing" simply means galvanizing or zinc coating. Just a fancy term for something that's done with a lot of steel products and it does help prevent rust on steel pipes, tubes, and sheet products.

Actually, there is a difference between galvanization and bonderization. The former applies specifically to protection using zinc coatings while the later applies specifically to phosphate coatings. However, there is one case where it can be used interchangeably and that is the application of zinc phospahate, which was the most commonly used rust proctection process in the bicycle industry.
I suspect RC = rolled cold steel. CR is a commonly used abbreviation for cold rolled steel and many European langauges reverse the placement of adjectives.
Hmm, I have a mid to late 1970s Superia catalog. We could start a Superia website.
