Which SR calipers should I use?
I want to pull the Dura Ace off my Guerciotti and build with SR. My frame is either a 81, 82 or 83. I'm confused about the block lettered brakes versus the script lettered brakes. Were the block lettered brakes used for SR to the late 70s and then used for NR for the early 80s? The script used for SR in the 80s? I have a rear derailleur already that is Pat 83.

Thanks guys. Looks like it is the block letter calipers on both of your bike. Nice bikes btw!
Kurt, I checked out velobase. Thanks. Looks lik block lettered with flat release was NR from 1960s to 1978, then the cupped release brakes were used for NR from 1978 through the 1980s. It looks like the blocked with flat release was used for SR from 1974 to 1976 then the script brakes for SR from "mid 80s" on. What was used for SR from 1976 to the "mid 80s" If there was no SR during that time period I'm gonna look like more of a noob than I already am

The Super Record group used the same "Record" calipers and shift levers as the Nuovo Record group. The block lettering to script lettering changeover occurred in the early 80s. If your Campy shift levers have the raised lettering and bumps along the rim, the brake calipers should have block lettering to be consistent. If the shift levers have recessed lettering, then the calipers should have the script lettering to match:

I bought a set of script lettered SR brakes in 1985 for my new Trek 2000. I am pretty sure that they were the first ones in the Intermountain West, anyway. They may have been released a little earlier, but not much. In 1984 they were block lettered, cupped release levers.

my '80 mclean/silk hope has (I assume) original equipment - block lettered calipers, cupped release levers, and raised letter shifters, if that helps.

This is one of those murky ones, IMO. Chuck Schmidt's admittedly imperfect timeline indicates that the script logo calipers came out in 1983, following upon the anniversary group, which used (a version of) them. They not only have a different logo, of course, but the caliper profile changed as well. The '84 catalog shows the old logo and profile, but catalog pictures aren't always a perfect reflection of what was in the supply chain, either. They could have been reused from earlier materials and the catalog was likely put together the year prior. Then again, once the new calipers were introduced, it could have taken them some time to work their way through the wholesale and retail system and on to bikes. I tend to agree with you, in the sense that I'd lean toward using block logo for '83 (with script logo possible), either style for '84, and script logo for '85.

Muky is right! I Think my bike is mostly original, but I keep finding oddities. 1. I have both versions of the shift levers. I was told the recessed ones are right for the 83 (anybody have an extra right side, recessed?). 2. I finally found a socket to take the crank bolts off and removed the cranks. One is marked 2 in a circle and the other is marked 3 in a circle. I am sure the cranks never have not been off the bike. 3. Notice the hoods are not Campy but DiaCompe! I suspect Colnago wanted yellow and Campy didn't make yellow hoods. Could be wrong on this one.
BTW: the pictrue is a before shot. The bike is almost down to the frame only. BB coming off next.
