1977 Schwinn Volare

Because of the Motobecane mixte photos I took, I was able to finally get a newer photo of my Volare (still not the best photos, I'll try to get a better shot later of it).

Before shot (when I bought it off E-bay):

After shot taken many months after the purchase, and made rideable in the modern era (I keep it in my computer room, unlike my other bikes, take note of the vintage brake hoods I modified to work with it):

... and yeah I added a double legged kickstand, superflash, light n'motion headlight, video cam, gps, speedo, air zounds, a vintage schwinn bag... and it's getting these dura ace pedals added to it eventually too (in the process of painting some PD-7750's). I got them cheap and well used off e-bay with the intent to take them apart, clean 'em up, and paint them. Finished cleaning them last night, will do a better job of painting them this weekend (mainly wanted to see how well they would look when I did the earlier paint to the first one, and may sand the rough places and repaint it). The abuse these pedals took must have been from the first users lack of a kickstand.

There's a trick to taking those things apart and putting them back together correctly. It has three sets of bearings, 9 bearings in the inner spindle, roller bearings adjacent to those, and 17 outter bearings where it attaches to the crank arms. There's an outter and a center nut near the crank arms too. The 17 bearings have to be "pre-flattened" and the whole spindle pushed against them when you're putting the spindle back into the housing. The outter nut has to be backed off all the way and the whole thing tightened as a whole (so grip the outter and center nut), otherwise the outter bearings get off track and you could probably damage it. I made sure I had plenty of grease inside the whole thing. I also took off the plastic parts and cleaned the dirt and grime out of the springs, etc. These should last me a lifetime, just need to get the right cleats for my shoes.

Volares are nice bikes. I'd like to see an "after shot" of the full bike taken from the drive side.

Wow look at all the wires and gizmos and whatnot, looks like its powering some kinda space station. Thats a sweet bike, the one (or three) schwinn models I'd like. Too much red on that one though, yek!

b.b.b.but it's supposed to be red... and yah I was trying to overdue it a weeee bit (eventually going to put it on the poseur thread). GPS I got for free, and paid <$10 for the mount. The headlight was $300, can't put a price on being seen and it demands respect on the road - I ride out before 6AM when it's dark to avoid traffic. The zounds air horn is LOUD, I've used it a bunch (again demand respect from cagers). The secure digital video cam was on clearance (couldn't pass it up, and who wouldn't want to video tape their death on the road). The watch / heart tracking thing sat on a shelf for a long time (wife had got it for me for christmas one year). The superflash rear blinkie is the brightest battery power unit (still not a Dinotte - on wishlist) that's relatively cheap. The pedals (again I've not finished yet - painting red, again going for the gaudy red look). The rear schwinn bag was a NOS purchase still in it's plastic bag - I like having some place to store my tools. Out of all my bikes, this is my favorite - so it gets pampered the most - even if it's a sick kinda' love. Oh and since it needed new tires, figured since Panasonic made it for Schwinn I'd stick to something in their lineup ie. Panaracers.

If you're going for the all red look, you'll need these.

Crane derailleur shifts like butter doesn't it? Here is my Volare, it was stripped of all its paint and the fork in not original but I love the way it rides and hopefully this winter I can get it powdercoated in a near original orange color.
