Inner Chainring Eating My Chainstay.

Hi. I have a vintage Sakae 28 tooth inner ring on a triple crank that is not tracking evenly alongside the frame. When you look directly down into it and turn the crank, it's lopsided like a wheel out of true. With the chain on, the chain is eating the chainstay where the inner ring is tracking too closely. While I'm going to swap out the 28 tooth ring for a 24 tooth one (and probably swap out the 45 tooth middle one for something a little smaller, maybe 38), I'm wondering if this is going to solve the problem. Maybe the axle is bent? Maybe the spider is weird (not likely, I think)? How do you track down the source of the wobble? I don't think the chain stay is so rusted as to be worrisome (1984 Trek), but I'd like to stop the source and fix the rust. Thanks for any thoughts.

Sounds like you may have a bent chainring and perhaps the BB spindle is a bit short...Try a spacer on the drive side cup to get yourself a MM of clearance and straighten/replace the offending chainrings.

Sturmey Archer cog spacers common to the AW rear hub work great and are cheap...
