Panasonic DX-1000 - Good shape - Worth the buy?
Hi evreyone,
This is my first post here but I have been coming here for a long time. I am fairly new to road bikes, or bicycling altogether for that matter, and have been riding for 16 months on a Schwinn. I outgrew that bike long ago and have been looking at bikes for a couple of months. Anyway, I was passing a local pawn shop today and notice they had some bikes. I turned around and went back by and noticed they had several good bikes (couple of nice Cannondales, a Specialized Allez and a nice Trek). I also noticed an old Panasonic DX-1000 with all Shimano 105 components. The frame and the components appear to be in really good shape. The bike is red and has some blue, yellow and green paint on it too. I looks like an 89 modle but I'm not sure. They want $60.00 for it. While it's not a newer Cannondale or Specialized, which I will buy soon enough, it could be kind of a fun bike to own and hold on to. I'm kind of curious what others might think of this buy. Would you spend the $60.00?
Thanks

Also, are you sure it was a DX-1000? I don't think it ever came outfitted with 105 components, they were on higher models such as the dx-3000 and 4000

Hey, maybe the paint was a little faded there and it said something else, 4000 maybe. The paint job on the 4000 looks more accurate and did have 105 components, from what I've read.

I went and looked again and I am even more convinced it is a 1000, but it has the paint job that I see on 4000 models on the web. So even if it is a 1000, it is still a good buy, ya think?

Still a good buy. Any of the panasonic DX models are highly desirable. I don't know where you live, but in most places that bike would sell for at the very least $150 on craigslist.

Well, I went back to day and looked it over real close and ended up paying $25 + tax for it. It has some minor issues but for a bike that is probably 20 years old it's in pretty darn good shape. It needs some new tires but the Araya rims look to be running straight. The brakes work great, but the drive needs a little grease and the shifting needs a little tweaking. but altogether, put $40 into some new tires and tubes and this thing is ready to go. It's a big bike in the 60-62cm range, a little too big for me to be sure, but I'll sure have fun fixing it up and selling it to some lucky tall guy that can ride it.

Ok, for anyone that is interested. I am pleased. I put some new tires and tubes on it. Cleaned things up a little and a little lube here and there. Adjusted the derailleur a little and took it for a spin. The good news is it beats the pants off my two yer old Schwinn. Easily climbs hills in gears I can only dream of on the Schwinn. Much faster that my Schwinn. Better ride then my Aluminum Schwinn and inspires a lot more confidence.
The bad news? Well........there isn't any. I love it. All in for $62 and change and it rides great.

Here are some pics.
First one is high-resolution. Not original pedals. I did not like the original pedals but I do have them.

This bike isn't as big as it originally appeared. In fact, I'm liking it so much I might actually end up keeping it.

Well really the DX500 (or was that the LX500 or the Sport LX?) was the entry level bike. It looks like the previos owner wanted better braking and upgraded to the 105's.
Very nice find.

The Sport models were in fact the entry level Panasonics. I think froze simply meant that the DX-1000 was the entry level DX series bike in the U.S.
By the way, there is a screaming good deal on a large DX-5000 (1986) in Miami right now if anyone has the itch. $175 on Craigslist
