Dropped
It's a 720. If you can't sell a 720 for $150, you're doing something wrong.
I am a little surprised at the price of that given the crappy ad. I'd want a bit more in the way of photos and description before forking over $1000.

720s are nice, but wow. I'm astounded. Around here you could get $300 without even trying hard. Maybe $500 if you're patient.

Maybe the one I sold wasn't a 720(was same color and same sticker but not reynolds), but I think I do have a 720 in my shed, time to clean up some spider webs

Not sure if that was a sarcastic joke somehow or you really have a vintage kirk poster. If you're serious i'll take it off your hands.

'720' means nothing in Tampa. But, lugged Reynolds 531 does.
I'd say that a $300-350 bike in Tampa that needs $75 worth of parts and 4 hours of labor.

Trek has re-used model numbers over the years. The bike in the OP's eBay ad is an early 1980s model 720, full Reynolds 531 lugged frame hand built in Waterloo Wisconsin, touring accoutrements, etc. Later in the 80s and early 90s Trek offered a different model 720 with a generic Asian robot TIG-welded frame, mediocre components and "hybrid" set up. Needless to say, it's the older frames that command the higher prices.

I have a 720 and it's a great bike, worth whatever the market will bear. BUT A LOUSY BIKE FOR LOADED TOURING which is what it was "designed" for.
Other touring bikes such as my ’77 Centurion Pro Tour and ’86 Jack Taylor used high quality butted tubing of a heavier gauge. Since the long 720 stays were custom drawn by Reynolds they could have easily have used Reynold’s touring gauge tube set. The previous owner of my 720 weighed 120 lbs when she toured on it but with a full load it was a bit of a noodle. The long 47cm chainstays are sometimes blamed for this but IMHO they are less of the problem than the light gauge of the tubeset and the use of 1/2" seatstays instead of 5/8"
But those things that make it a poor choice for loaded touring make it an absolutely wonderful bike for fast day rides. While stiffness is vital to a tandem or touring bike it's the last thing I want when it's just me and a small bag. The long stays and supple frame leave me fresh after a hard ride on our less than perfect roads. There are still those who think a stiff frame is more efficient, but I've seen too much evidence to the contrary.
For comparison, I also have a Trek 710 with the same silver brazed Reynolds tubes but 43cm stays. I'm getting rid of it as I much prefer the 720.
