Weld, Braze, or Epoxy?

I'm rebuilding my 1991 aluminum trek and the shifter bosses snapped off a while back. I know they're not welded and even though they are called "braze-on" I think they were attached with epoxy. Anyone know for sure? I didn't think you could weld or braze two different metals together. The bosses are not aluminum.

They were space age epoxied on. That is from Trek literature. Roger

Liquid Metal... this stuff is the snizzle!

JeremiahW037 09-01-09 07:39 PM

Space age epoxy huh? What exactly could that be? Some kind of high heat epoxy? What could I use at my house?

You can try out billy mays mighty putty, apparently it can tow a fully loaded 8 billion ton 18 wheeler or whatever, or maybe its so strong it could pull the earth outta orbit.

In reality the stuff probably can't hold a pre-school kids drawing on the refrigerator.

No, actually it works just as described, I've used this epoxy for years before Billy boy ever even heard of it and it does what it claims, very impressive stuff! :thumb:

3m 8115 or fusor 108b . You can put quarter panels on with it???

JeremiahW037 09-02-09 06:51 AM

I'll probably just get these and use in combination with some 3M Scoth-Weld.

The liquid metal as described or any of the other SLower cure epoxies are what you need. The only problem with some of the slow cures is they may "settle" or sag some, so you have to stablize the part EXACTLY where you want it and watch that it doesn't drift while it sets. The metal and putty epoxies can often be filed, drilled and tapped just like you welded a blob of metal on there and worked it. I've built canoes with epoxies and when mixed and work correctly, they are the best bonding agent bar NONE

I have a question. looking over most of the replies here I do not see any reference to any type of crossbolt (like cdales have) is there one and the epoxy? also any chance you bout this new? have a record of it? what is the frame warranty on a trek

JeremiahW037 09-02-09 10:10 AM

On an aluminum frame there is going to be a cross bolt. Go to the site in my previous post and you can see in the picture the bolt. If you go to a thread about my bike rebuild "1991 trek 1200 redux" you can see pictures of the original cross rod through the bosses. On a steel bike you can simply weld a boss on but aluminum is tricky so you can't just weld it.

Bianchigirll 09-02-09 01:12 PM

so the orginal poster should be looing for that bolt? you needed a small common screwdriver for the cdale ones

How about using clamp-on shifters instead?

rhenning 09-02-09 03:26 PM

The problem with clamp on shifters is Trek uses an odd oversize oversize tubing. Roger
