I haven't had much luck finding KHS info. Three weeks ago I bought what I think is a '97 KHS Summit X, so I've inquired on various mtn bike forums without many responses. I've written to KHS twice without a response. IF I find out more, I'll let you know.

Bike as bought is in the link in my sig. This past week it has been reconfigured as an Xtracycle.

BTW, my ser# is A25 U70412901, so yours is older than mine, but I don't know for sure that mine is a '97.

Good luck,
Steve

I purchased a KHS Classic. Serial 11219903 on the bottom of the bottom bracket. Champion No. 5 tubing sticker (Tange). Suntour Vx derailleurs with Suntour power rachet shifters (clamp ons). Nothing about butted tubes on the sticker. Dark red color with the head tube in silver. 23" frame. Made in Taiwan sticker (at the base of the seat tube) makes me think it would be a mid 80's vintage (after Japan had been priced out of the low end market, but before China). The only component that may have a date stamp was the seat post, SR brand, with a P-81 (for 1981?) stamping. Bike needs full overhaul, with all the consumables shot. Purchase price was in the $50-75 dollar range.

Vx derailleurs all have date codes, and I usually find them on the steering tube, on brake calipers, on the freewheel, crankset, stem, etc. Sometimes I find them on handlebars and brake levers.

The front Suntour derailleur had a date code of XF (1981 June) and the rear is a WJ (1980 Oct). So these two dates match pretty close to the guessed date on the stem. My guess is that the bike was a 1982 model. Thanks for the assist Thrifty Bill.
