There is no such thing as 'brifters'.

There are STI's and Ergo's.

They are not interchangeable.

If you say 'brifters', no one will know what you are talking about.

A combination brake lever/shifter, now being made much less attractive by 49.99 Dura Ace 7800 SL down tube shifters. They really shift nicely, are super simple to set up, and I can spend the extra $300 on loose women and alcohol.

Funny - I almost never call them STI's or Ergos. I nearly have the LBS's trained on the term as well.
