Shorty Fenders

A friend of mine has a 70's Schwinn Super Sport that has SHORT (10-12") aluminum fenders. Just enought to keep the rain and mud off the brake units but NOT require side stablizers and don't add weight. Has anyone seen any of these around? He'd like another set, and frankly, I kind of like them for a "sport-commuter" set up. If there's anyplace that either carries them as NOS or makes them nowadays, let me know!!!

ilikebikes 09-14-09 02:23 PM

I've seen a similiar set but they are smaller and chromed, not aluminum.

bashermax 09-14-09 03:30 PM

Hmmmm Maybe these were chrome too. Been a while since I saw them up close and REALLY looked at them. Is there anything like this around you think???

I think Wald makes 'em cheap, and I've seen them at swap meets. Check Niagara Cycle maybe?

Wald # 80s, I've used them on a couple of flippers. You have to bend the bracket to fit them right, and this will sometimes loosen the rivets holding it together. They look great and help do the job, though, so for less than $8 a set I say go for it.

EDIT: Here's a set on a Puch I rebuilt.

I've got a set I pulled off an old Schwinn. PM me if interested.

I think I have a few new pair of aluminum either wald or weinmann, maybe one set of some sort of plastic.PM if interested.

I just took a set off a Super Sport, too. They'll keep your brakes sort of dry but you yourself will get all muddy and wet. They're really pretty worthless, I don't know they bothered making them. Full-length alloy or plastic fenders work way better and are actually quite light.

I think the rear one is/was on backwards?

Mind posting a pic? I may be interested. :D

Bicycle Bob's in Portsmouth NH has a few left. They show up on Ebay, too, every now and then. Tha'ts where I found mine, decent alloy ones the guy said were from his Bianchi. I paid $15 or $20, including shipping. They're just for looks, I don't really ride in the rain.
I've also been tempted to just hack one big fender into two as I have a couple of singles who's mates got lost.

More coverage, the rack stayed.

Anyway, yeah they don't do anything at all in the rain or riding through puddles, but I've found them to be helpful when the streets are just wet. They'll help stop the spray that kicks up. Like sailorb, I just love the way they look.

and I also have a 11-1/4" fender blank that can be worked to do whatever you like...

these are best as solo seat setups, but can be fabbed for most anything!..

I am going a new direction now with my bike so these can go now....PM me please if interested.

fender attachement

BTW... How DO you mount these things. Seems like there isn't much to screw/bold fasten to up under there. Maybe they're super conductive and just "Hover" in place

I've pm'ed a couple others but in case those fall through, what do you want for these? Are they in good shape?

They attach to the brake bolt.

steppinthefunk 09-15-09 07:31 AM

I have them on my bike too. I got them for $5.00 online but later realized that they are available at at least 3 shops locally.

I think there's also a Bluemels version that shows up on ebay pretty cheap.

Why you would want them, I really don't understand. I guess I thought they looked cool too, once upon a time, but eventually I decided they were totally useless. And once you decide something is totally useless (unlike, say, kickstands, chain guards, dork disks, etc) it no longer looks cool.

But, like, whatever.

Your right, more than half the people I see riding bikes look cool, but are totally ****ing useless.

I like tailfins, too.

YoKev 09-15-09 05:57 PM

dude, are you related to andre the giant?

ozneddy 09-16-09 04:26 AM

We,ve been thru this B4,but to recap,in the UK in the 60,s all had to have mudguards on at least 6 inches long so they made them so to comply with English law,but still keep the weight down for road racing ! "Bluemels" were the prefered choice !

they keep your headset clean, as well as anything else that might be in that area like a headlight.

ilikebikes 09-16-09 09:27 PM

New fenders, not bad for ten bucks, they'll do a good job of keeping brakes and headset relatively dirt free. :)
