A while ago, somebody contacted me looking for info on Focus bikes but I could not find the catalog.

Well, I found the catalog and I was thinking about scanning the whole thing and put on the web or here in Classic & Vintage. Do we have a sticky or a repository of old catalogs somewhere?

At any rate, if anybody is looking for info on this brand, just pm me.

I consider Focus to be a 'mysterious brand'. There is no mention in the catalog of city or location of the Focus company or factory. All I could see is 'Made in Japan' There a no US distributors either listed. No contact phone numbers. Nothing.

I received this catalog when I bought a complete Focus bike. I bought the bike mainly for the Superbe parts and I will be putting the 52 cm frame on Ebay sometime in the near future.

Focus had good distribution in the Toronto market in the early 90's but most were mtn or hybrids. Typically well made production frames although the few I rode seemed a little heavy.

Focus SG-300 (1985) Tange 900
 

I figured I'd try and resurrect this post by sharing my 1985 Focus SG-300. I've had this since 1986 (bought it from original owner) and it's about 95% original (minus cables, freewheel, tires/tubes). The Concour saddle was on it when I bought it and is still really nice. It's a 25" frame and specs:
FRAME – 25" Tange 900 CR-MO, double-butted steel tubes
FORK – ?
STEM – SR 100mm
HANDLEBAR – winpista kusuki (Japan) 42cm
BRAKES – Dia-Compe “G” side-pull
BRAKE LEVERS – Dia-Compe
DERAILLEURS – SunTour Cyclone
SHIFT LEVERS – SunTour Cyclone (friction)
FREEWHEEL – Shimano 6-speed, 14 - 28 (not original)
CRANKSET – Sakae SA, 170mm crank arm length
CHAINRINGS – 52/42
PEDALS – SR SP-154 (Japan) w/Brevet Toe Clips (France)
RIMS – Araya 700c
HUBS – Suzue Sealed
SADDLE - Concor, S. Marco, Supercorsa (leather top)

I just bought a Focus mountain bike. It looks to be a late '80s model. U-brake, Deore components with thumb shifters, Tange MTB tubing (straight gauge), Nitto bar and stem. I post a picture or two when I get a chance.

And thank you 'Iowhat' for deciding to part with your Focus, can't wait to pick it up this weekend. For those interested here's a pic he posted on local CL where I spotted it.

I rescued a focus branded 10 speed from a recycling company a couple years ago serial # aryd74045.
Writing on chainstay "made by Araya ".
Found no information regarding this bike online.
The ride is comparable to my Raleigh Super Course. It's a mint green and white Bike with suede saddle, and Araya rims.

Focus was a Japanese brand owned by Marui, a Japanese trading company with roots in the shoe industry. They reportedly diversified into bicycles circa 1963 with their Orions brand. In the USA they are better known for their SR and Shogun lines of bicycles and their Tioga line of ATB tyres, components and accessories. Like most Japanese trading companies, Marui did not own a factory that manufactured product but relied on contractors. There's no surprise to see Focus bicycles being manufactured by Araya, as they they were also a prime source for the SR sister brand.

Thanks for the update, there is so little info on these, I'm grateful for every scrap of info I can get. I'm really enjoying the one I got from Iowhat. It has a couple small stickers on it that I was going to remove until he told me their history, I knew right then they had to stay as they had been there almost since the bike was new.

Just located a Focus RG-700 bike recently in Michigan...it looks like a nice period Triathalon bike w/Tange 2 tubing. Too small for you at 58cm!

I just got a Focus SG-300 bike from a friend and in the process to restoring it. I need help on how to remove the crankshaft. What tool do I need and where

Pin wrench/spanner

To remove and adjust the bottom bracket, the proiper tools are:

1. Lockring spanner (Parl HCW-5 or equivalent)

2. Adjustable cup spanner (Park HCW-11 or equivalent)

Most people don't remove the fixed cup, unless it needs replacing. If it does, you'll need a fixed cup spanner. There are multiple standards for the distance across the flats but the most common is 36mm (Park HCW-4 or equivalent)

Regarding the freewheel removal, you'll need a 2 prong freewheel removal tool designed for a Maeda/SunTour freewheel (Park FR-2) or equivalent.

The two dimples are for a pin spanner (Park SPA-2 or equivalent) that adjusts the outer cone and play of the freewheel. Most people don't touch this unless the freewheel requires servicing.

The references in parentheses are tool numbers for Park Tool Company ( https://www.parktool.com/ ) who are probably the most widely distributed tools carried by bicycle shops.

Edit: I'd appreciate the serial number and country of origin for your Focus, which may tell me the year and manufacturer. I can't quite make them out in the photos. TIA.

The bike is made in Japan and the serial# is A5F11751. Thank you so much for the info. Pls let me know if you find out more info about this bike based on the serial#.

Thank-you for taking the time to do this. I don't know the identify of the manufacturer but it indicates 1985 manufacturer This is consistent with the timeline for the SunTour LePree derailleurs and freewheel also has a 1985 date code. I'd place this model right around the transition from entry level to mid-range.

you are correct, the derailleur are Suntour LaPree. The quality of the components looks very good. Looks like i could reuse all the components after cleaning and degrease. Definitely will replace the chain and cables. Thanks for the the tools recommendation and info.

Intersting to see the '85 mixte version of the SG-300. I had the '85 men's (25" frame, sold to MurrayMissile). It was outfitted with Suntour Cyclone deraillers and an Sakae SA crank
