Campy or Shimano
I own an early 1970s Coventry Eagle road bike and my rear derailleur broke (an old simplex that probably came with the bike some 35 years ago) and i've narrowed it down to campagnolo and shimano, I'm leaning towards campagnolo only because British bike manufacturers never used shimano in the 70s.
what's your take? i've narrowed it down towards a shimano 600 or this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/CAMPAGNOLO-REAR-...#ht_1276wt_898 I also dont have much to spend either -.- |
If you're trying to stay somewhat vintage and go with a 5-7 speed-
check out the suntour stuff, it was technically the best for that era. probably the cyclone but if you want to go newer the suntour superbe stuff works great. from there i'd go to the campy nuovo record or super record, depends if you like the cast or smooth look. I've got a shimano 600 (arabesque style) rear derailleur, used but worked fine shipped from san diego for $25. TP I |

Also, you can find Campy cheaper than that. I've gotten a bunch of derailleurs for under $25, including a Record, a Gran Sport, and a Valentino. There's always a zillion on eBay.

For quality at any price range it's tough to beat some of the old suntour derailleurs.

thanks guys
thanks, i'm also looking at one in San Francisco (local craigslist ad)
if not, i think i'll keep searching (or go with the shimano 600, it was a pretty good deal, I think $29) |
I have a nice set of shimano titlist derailleurs (predecessor to 600) which would be period for the bike and I would sell for $20 plus shipping.

the guy in san francisco sold his, but i went to my LBS, a small shop nestled in the heart of downtown, and picked up a suntour seven for $10. I asked them if they had any campy components, and they didnt, they recommended me to a store up the road, but I really like doing business with them so I just got the suntour. I cleaned it up a bit, re-greased the pulleys, and tada.
i've attatched before and after pictures, the shiny one is the suntour seven (third after cyclone and supurbe) |
