On further reading, it looks like Suntour actually made the little gizmos, and I take it they`re hard to come by. No matter, though- I also found that some nice looking (and sturdy) clamp on bosses or stops are available for not many donuts. But I think I missed out on that frame I was scoping out, so will just stash the new-found knowledge away in the dusty ol memory banks in case I need it in the future. Kinda like what somebody might do with one of those adaptor mounts

Take one Sport Tourer, replace the Biopace chainrings, install cyclocross tires and end up with a really fun gravel grinder.

1979 912, Updated

I guess I've been part of this cult for longer then I realized that there WAS a cult. I can account for two of 'em, three if you count the '79 310 my ex-wife officially owns, but has no idea where it is.

Here are some recent shots of my '79 912 purchased new by me back then in Boulder, CO and recently updated with Sachs New Success 8-speed brifters, topped off with a brand new Selle An-Atomica saddle that finally provides a good (for me) riding position on a proper leather saddle.

I've been using New Success RD and brifters, which are like my wife's similar age Chorus brifters, since my Klein 18 years ago, and these are that same set. It shifts as well (light and precise) as the newer ones, although each side has been rebuilt once with Campy parts. The cool part is the cog spacing is exactly the same as Shimano 8-speed, and I assemble those cassettes from a drawer full of loose cogs - no, Shimano cogs do NOT have to come from the same letter set. I have yet to wear out a Sachs RD in many thousands of miles, but I've got a bunch of spares just in case.

The really fun thing about this update, besides how nice it is to ride that 912 again after more than a few years, is that I only needed the saddle, seatpost and pretty new cable housings for this build. I was inspired after rebuilding my daughter's 1985 310 (see following post with that one and its bullhorn bars) that she picked up as a single speed in Savannah several years ago. I had forgotten how nice these frames are.

1985 310 with Bullhorns

Here's my other recent Miyata rebuild, a 1985 310 that I converted to 14-speeds with DT, bullhorn bars and fenders at my daughter's specific request. She's going to school in Vancouver BC, so the fenders were an easy sell. BTW, she's been a Brooks fan for years. That's one of my old Team Pros, probably from when I had it on that 1979 912 a post back. And yes, that's a Dura-Ace crank, because the one that was on the 310 when I started couldn't take the small chainring I wanted, and this crank was just sitting in my parts stash, waiting for a bike.

Thanks, yea it's great fun to ride. I love the feel of the steel frame, fast and responsive.

I bought it a month ago and couldn't be happier. It has been standing in a basement the last 17 years before I picked it up so it is in really good condition.

This ones coming back to life. All original components and I picked it up for a song. She was filthy before I tore her down. Now every part except the stem and bars have been taken apart and cleaned and polished. They are getting attention as I post this.

and you can see my 1000 behind her.

A great one!

I love the color of yours. That is a beautiful blue. I ride a 90 1400a myself and mine is all white, although the catalogues don't show one. It's the first vintage bike I bought when I got back to riding, and she is a keeper. Now the Italians have my heart, but my Miyata is my go-to ride...

Hi all!

I purchased my bottom of the barrel Miyata around 7 months ago, but never road it until a month and 2 weeks ago. I was just looking for a road bike that could handle all of my 328 pounds, and thought steel frame would be the way to go. So far I’ve lost 38 pounds and never felt better!

I love this bike!

My 1986 912 that I've had for about a year now. The original owner had painted over the pink head tube for his son to ride it but he wasn't interested So up for sale it went. Some acetone took it right off and didn't hurt the original paint.

I've replaced the crank that was on it when I got it as it wasn't original and the pedal threads were stripped out. My LBS had a take off Tiagra crank I got for cheap, put on a Brooks B17 and some gatorskins. I was distinctly underwhelmed with the original Shimano 600 brakes so when I saw a pair of Dura Ace 7800 calipers for $50 bucks on CL I jumped on them and they are awesome! Eventually I want to replace the wheels so I can put on a ten speed rear end and matching derailleurs. It is an amazing ride and I just wish I had the engine to push it properly, but I'm working on it.

As purchased:

Just bought a 1985 Miyata 1000 for $170, the only one for sale on Craigslist in Oregon right now. The frame, paint, and decals are in excellent condition, and it looks like all the original components are there. Needs cleaned and trued, then time for some bar end shifters, new tape, a Brooks saddle, a taller stem, and some touring! (oh yeah, I guess I'll flip those handlebars around too, pic is as purchased).

Nope, that bike is total garbage and not worth fixing up. (see other thread on classic bike worth). Around here I have to pay for garbage service. Sooooo.... Since that Miyata is in my size, I'll gladly take it off your hands for free.

It's third in the que right now, after my Dawes Galaxy and a Raleigh I'm going to fix up for my son. After all I have read here about the 1000's I jumped on this one, talked the seller down from $400. Haven't even been able to ride it yet.

Can anyone answer this question for me? Did the late 80's team miyata 52cm frames have the headtube pump knob on them? The 50 did not and the 54 did. I spotted one somewhere and I think the owner incorrectly measured it.

I'm new here and excited to show off my new to me 81 Team Miyata. I've liked Miyata's ever since finding and buying a 512 in a thrift shop or $45 bucks about 12 years ago. I had to upgrade the rusted out wheels and a few other parts but otherwise it was great. Put many miles on it. My new Team needs some help too. I want to build it up with Dura Ace.

I figured this would be a great place to find out what is the latest gen of dura ace I can mount on this bike. The bike currently has several brands and models of parts; Shimano, SunTour, Dia Compe, 3TTT. I'm partial to Dura Ace so anyone out there that can direct me with which would be be best to use (7400, 7700, etc) would be much appreciated.

My 1989 Team Miyata. I bought it at the flea market as a bare frame with no fork, for $10. I really cannot afford a 7400 group at the moment, so I am building it with what I have. It might be a long term project, and end stock someday. Planning to recover the Benotto "Laser" saddle with white leather if I can find some. Wheels are kind of wacky, Matrix ISO3's with Deore XT hubs, came from a Trek 7600. Right profile, just wrong color. I have a black stem somewhere, but it's origin 8. Originally had black Nitto stem, but that's something I will have to find later. I do have a Cinelli set that would do it justice, so that may find it's way on there.,,,,BD

And yes, the DMR bmx pedals were only to check leg extension. They're coming off soon I promise!
